A guide to Better Combat - the Minecraft Dungeons-style melee overhaul: how the sweeping multi-target attacks work, the swing animations and attack reach of each weapon type, the attack-indicator crosshair, dual wielding, the in-game settings screen, and tips for getting the most out of the new combat.

Overview#

Better Combat replaces Minecraft's stiff, single-target clicking with a fluid, spectacular melee system inspired by Minecraft Dungeons. Every melee weapon gets real swing animations and an attack pattern, and each strike is multi-target - one swing hits every enemy caught inside the weapon's arc.

The goal is combat that is easy to pick up and fun to master: wade into a crowd, swing once, and watch the whole group flash and take damage together. Different weapon types swing differently and reach different distances, an attack-indicator crosshair tells you when your next hit is ready and what it will connect with, and the animations play on the upper body so you keep moving while you fight.

Getting Started#

There is nothing to craft or unlock - the new combat applies to the melee weapons you already use.

  1. Hold any melee weapon in your main hand (a sword, axe, or any modded melee weapon).
  2. Left-click to attack. Instead of a single poke, your character performs a full swing that arcs through the space in front of you.
  3. Aim at a group. Any enemy inside the swing's arc is hit by the same strike, so line up multiple mobs and clear them at once.
  4. Watch the crosshair. The attack indicator shows when your swing is charged and highlights the enemies about to be hit - time your clicks with it instead of spamming.

That's the whole loop: hold a weapon, swing into the enemies, and let the sweeping attacks do the work.

How Attacks Work#

The core of the mod is the sweeping, multi-target attack.

  • Area swings. Each attack covers an arc or zone rather than a single point. Every mob standing inside that zone takes damage from the one swing.
  • Weapon-shaped reach. The size and shape of the hit zone depend on the weapon type - a big, heavy weapon sweeps through a wider area than a small, quick one.
  • Readable timing. Attacks are built around a clear swing-and-recover rhythm. Landing a hit at the right moment deals full damage, so good timing beats frantic clicking.
  • Upper-body animation. Swings animate on the arms and torso while your legs keep walking, so you stay mobile in a fight instead of rooting in place.

Because hits are area-based, positioning matters: face a cluster of enemies head-on so the arc passes through as many of them as possible.

Weapon Types#

Different weapon categories have their own swing animations, speed, and reach.

Swords

Fast, balanced horizontal sweeps. Swords are the all-rounder - quick enough to attack often and wide enough to catch several enemies in front of you. Great for clearing groups of light mobs.

Axes & Heavy Weapons

Slower but wide and hard-hitting chops. Heavier weapons trade attack speed for a bigger hit zone and more damage per swing, ideal for smashing through tougher or tightly-packed enemies.

Daggers & Short Blades

Quick, short-range stabs. Daggers attack rapidly but cover a small area, rewarding players who like a fast, aggressive, up-close style.

Spears & Long Weapons

Long-reach thrusts that let you hit enemies from farther away, striking before they can close the distance. Good for keeping dangerous mobs at arm's length.

The exact feel of each weapon comes from its type, so experiment to find the swing style that suits how you like to fight.

Dual Wielding#

Better Combat supports dual wielding - holding a weapon in your off-hand alongside your main hand.

  • Placing a compatible weapon in the off-hand slot lets you attack with both weapons in an alternating rhythm.
  • Dual wielding changes your attack cadence and animations, giving a faster, flashier flurry of strikes.
  • It pairs well with quick weapons like daggers for a rapid, aggressive playstyle.

Try different main-hand and off-hand combinations to see how the swing pattern changes.

Attack Indicator#

The attack-indicator crosshair is your feedback for timing and targeting.

  • It shows when your next swing is charged and ready to deal full damage.
  • It highlights the enemies that fall inside your weapon's hit zone, so you know exactly who a swing will connect with before you commit.
  • Using it turns combat from click-spam into deliberate, well-timed strikes.

If you prefer a cleaner screen, the indicator can be adjusted or turned off in the settings.

Keybinds & Controls#

Better Combat uses the standard attack control - no new keys are required to fight.

  • Left-click (Attack) performs a full weapon swing that sweeps through the enemies in front of you.
  • Off-hand slot holds a second weapon for dual wielding, using the usual swap-hands control to place it.
  • Movement keys work normally during a swing, since attack animations play on the upper body.

All tuning of the combat itself is done through the in-game settings screen (see Configuration) rather than extra hotkeys.

Configuration#

Better Combat includes an in-game settings screen where you can tune the whole system to taste. Common options include:

  • Attack speed / animation speed - how fast swings play out.
  • Attack reach - fine-tune how far your swings extend.
  • Camera behavior - optional camera tilt/movement during swings, which can be reduced or disabled.
  • Attack indicator - toggle or adjust the targeting crosshair.
  • Animation toggles - enable or disable specific swing animations.
  • Dual-wield options - control how off-hand weapons behave.

Open the settings screen, adjust the sliders and toggles, and the changes apply to your combat immediately - so you can dial in exactly the feel you want.

Tips#

  • Face the crowd. Point straight at a group so your swing's arc passes through as many enemies as possible - the multi-target hit is where the mod shines.
  • Match the weapon to the fight. Use wide, heavy weapons against packed groups and long weapons to poke dangerous mobs from range.
  • Time with the indicator. Wait for the crosshair to show a charged swing for full damage instead of clicking as fast as you can.
  • Keep moving. Since animations don't stop your feet, strafe around enemies while swinging to stay safe.
  • Try dual wielding a quick off-hand weapon for a faster attack rhythm.
  • Tune the settings if the reach, speed, or camera feel off - a few slider tweaks can completely change how combat plays.

FAQ & Troubleshooting#

Do I need to craft anything? No. The new combat automatically applies to the melee weapons you already carry.

Why does one swing hit several mobs? That's the core feature - attacks are area-based, so every enemy inside the weapon's arc takes damage from the same swing.

Do modded weapons work? Yes. The system is data-driven, so vanilla and most modded melee weapons get swing animations and attack patterns out of the box.

The camera moves too much when I swing - can I stop it? Yes. Open the settings screen and reduce or disable the camera tilt option.

Can I turn off the attack-indicator crosshair? Yes, it can be adjusted or disabled in the settings.

My swings feel too slow or too short - what do I do? Use the attack-speed and reach options in the settings screen to tune them, and remember that heavier weapon types are naturally slower with a wider reach.
