Overview#
The Rats mod adds a complex ecosystem of rodents to Minecraft. While wild rats are often seen as pests that steal food and dig through wooden walls, they can be tamed and upgraded into powerful allies. These tamed rats can perform a variety of tasks, from simple item transport to complex auto-crafting and ore doubling. The mod also introduces a unique plague mechanic, several boss encounters, and a dedicated dimension known as Ratlantis.

Rats: Taming and Management#
Wild Rats
Wild rats spawn at night in the Overworld, typically in dark areas or near Garbage Blocks. They are naturally skittish and will flee from players unless the player is wearing a Piper Hat. Wild rats are notorious for:
- Thievery: They can steal food and seeds from chests, sometimes leaving behind Contaminated Food.
- Destruction: They can dig through wooden planks to create Rat Holes and can squeeze through fences.
- Crop Damage: They will occasionally eat and destroy mature crops.
Taming Process
To tame a rat, you must first corner it or trap it. Drop Cheese near the rat; it will take 10–15 feedings to gain its trust. Once tamed, the rat will emit heart particles and can be interacted with to open its inventory.
Rat Inventory and Commands
Tamed rats have a dedicated GUI where you can manage their equipment and behavior:
- Equipment Slots: Rats can hold one item in their hands/mouth and wear a helmet or banner for protection and identification.
- Upgrade Slots: Rats have slots for Rat Upgrades that define their specialized abilities.
- Commands:
- Wander: The rat moves around aimlessly but will defend its owner.
- Stay Here: The rat sits and remains stationary.
- Follow Me: The rat follows the owner like a wolf.
- Hunt Prey: The rat attacks nearby animals or monsters.
- Gather Items: The rat picks up items on the ground and brings them to a designated home point.
- Harvest: The rat breaks mature crops or grass.
- Transport Items: The rat moves items between two designated containers (requires a Cheese Staff to set locations).
Transporting Rats
Players can carry up to three rats on their person by sneak-clicking them to place them on their head or shoulders. To remove them, sneak and "punch" the air with an empty hand. For larger groups, a Rat Sack can be used to store multiple rats as items.
Rat Upgrades#
Upgrades are the core of rat automation. They are categorized into tiers: Basic, Advanced, and Elite.
| Upgrade Name | Tier | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Health/Speed | Basic | Increases the rat's max health or movement speed. |
| Strength/Armor | Basic | Increases attack damage or damage resistance. |
| Chef | Functional | Allows the rat to cook food items in a furnace or smoker. |
| Miner | Functional | The rat will mine ores and stones in a designated area. |
| Farmer/Planter | Functional | The rat will plant seeds and harvest crops automatically. |
| Fisherman | Functional | The rat will fish in nearby water bodies. |
| Lumberjack | Functional | The rat will chop down trees. |
| Crafting | Advanced | Allows the rat to auto-craft items on a Rat Crafting Table. |
| Ore Doubling | Advanced | The rat processes ores to produce two ingots per ore. |
| Animal Breeder | Advanced | The rat will use held food to breed nearby animals. |
| Psychic | Elite | Grants the rat telekinetic abilities and increased range. |
| Nonbeliever | Elite | Makes the rat immune to magical damage and boss effects. |
| Archeologist | Elite | Allows the rat to transform items (e.g., Beacons into Arcane Technology). |
Mobs and Bosses#
Overworld Mobs
- Plague Rat: A hostile, green-furred rat that inflicts the Plague status effect. They spawn in dark areas or from Diseased Garbage.
- Pied Piper: A hostile humanoid that plays a flute to control a swarm of rats. Killing him drops the Rat Flute.
Bosses
- The Rat King: Summoned by using a Ball of Filth on a rat. It is a mass of rats tied together by their tails. It summons rat minions and has high health.
- The Black Death: A powerful boss summoned by a Plague Doctor. It wears a plague mask and wields a scythe, summoning plague clouds and minions. Drops the Black Death Mask and Scythe.
Ratlantis Mobs
- Neo-Ratlantean: Advanced, bipedal rats that fire lasers. They drop Psionic Rat Brains.
- Pirat: Rats on flying ships or boats that fire cannons. They drop Pirat Hats and Cutlasses.
- Ratlantean Automaton: Massive stone machines that must be built like an Iron Golem using Marbled Cheese. They are extremely powerful guardians.
Cheesemaking and Mechanics#
Cheesemaking
Cheese is the primary resource for taming and crafting.
- Standard Cheese: Pour a bucket of milk into a Cauldron and wait for it to curdle. Right-click to harvest a Block of Cheese.
- Blue Cheese: Add sugar to a cauldron of milk to create Blue Cheese.
- Nether Cheese: Add a lava bucket to a cauldron of milk.
- Curdling Station: A block used to automate cheese production by piping in milk.
The Plague
The Plague is a dangerous status effect that prevents natural health regeneration. It is spread by Plague Rats and the Black Death. It can be cured by a Plague Doctor (a villager profession) or by using Purifying Liquid.
Rat Breeding
To breed rats, place a male and female in a Rat Cage with a Rat Breeding Lantern. Pups have a chance to spawn with unique color mutations, such as Albino, Cream, or Hooded patterns.
Ratlantis#
Ratlantis is a legendary dimension filled with advanced technology and cheese-based architecture.
Accessing Ratlantis: Players must obtain a Chunky Cheese Token, an extremely rare drop from rats (1 in 10,000 chance). Right-clicking the token on the ground will spawn a Ratlantis Portal.
Key Features:
- Structures: Massive aqueducts and temples made of Marbled Cheese.
- Resources: Contains Oratchalcum Ore and Ancient Sawblades used for high-tier upgrades.
- Flight: Players can encounter Rat Barons in biplanes and Ghost Pirats in flying ships.
Essential Items and Blocks#
- Cheese Staff: Used to set home points and container targets for rats.
- Rat Flute: Used to command all nearby rats simultaneously.
- Rat Trap: A block that can be baited with cheese to kill wild rats automatically.
- Trash Can: Converts unwanted items into Garbage Blocks, which are used to spawn rats or find Plastic.
- Rat Cage: A modular block used to house and breed tamed rats. Can be decorated with hammocks, seed bowls, and tubes.
