Overview#
Supplementaries is a highly configurable mod designed to enhance the Vanilla+ experience by adding a plethora of new blocks, items, and mechanics that feel native to Minecraft. It focuses on functional decorations, redstone automation, and quality-of-life improvements. Whether you are looking for better storage solutions like Sacks and Safes, advanced redstone components like the Relayer and Bellows, or purely aesthetic additions like Pedestals and Hanging Signs, Supplementaries provides a comprehensive toolkit for builders and technical players alike.
The mod is built on the Moonlight Lib and is available for Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge. It is famous for its deep integration with other mods (like Quark and Farmer's Delight) and its extensive customization options via configs and datapacks.
Functional Blocks#
Functional blocks in Supplementaries serve specific gameplay purposes, ranging from fluid management to item display.
Utility & Workstations
| Block | Description | Image |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestal | Displays a single item. Certain items like Swords, Tools, and Globes have unique 3D render positions. | |
| Faucet | Extracts fluids from tanks or items from inventories. Can pour into containers below or interact with blocks like Concrete Powder. | |
| Jar | Stores up to 12 units of "Soft Fluids" (Potions, Milk, Honey) or 12 cookie-like items. Can also capture small mobs. | |
| Bellows | Pushes air when powered by redstone. Speeds up Furnaces, intensifies fire, and accelerates copper oxidation. | |
| Hourglass | Can be filled with sand, dust, or powder. Acts as a redstone timer; duration depends on the material used. | |
| Notice Board | Displays a Map, Banner Pattern, or Written Book. Redstone pulses turn the pages of displayed books. | |
| Planter | Allows crops to grow without a nearby water source. Useful for underground or aesthetic farms. | |
| Safe | A blast-resistant container with 27 slots. Can be locked with a Key to prevent other players from opening it. |
Redstone Components
- Relayer: A 1-tick delay diode that passes redstone signals forward. Useful for compact logic.
- Redstone Illuminator: A light source that emits light inversely proportional to the redstone signal it receives (on by default).
- Speaker Block: Broadcasts a custom message to chat or via the game narrator when powered.
- Wind Vane: Visually swings with weather. Outputs a signal (1 for rain, 2 for thunder).
- Cog Block: A solid block version of redstone dust that can transmit signals vertically up to 14 blocks.
- Crystal Display: Displays a number (0-15) or symbol based on the redstone signal strength.
- Turn Table: Rotates the block it faces. Rotation speed depends on redstone power.
- Pulley Block: Retracts or deploys Ropes and Chains when rotated by a Turn Table or Crank.
Items & Tools#
Supplementaries adds several unique tools and consumables that expand interaction with the world.
Specialized Tools
- Wrench: Rotates blocks (stairs, logs, etc.) and can be used to configure certain Supplementaries blocks. Left-clicking rotates entities like Armor Stands.
- Slingshot: Fires blocks from your inventory to place them at a distance. Can be enchanted with Stasis (removes gravity) and Multi-shot.
- Quiver: Stores up to 7 stacks of arrows. Allows quick cycling between arrow types using a GUI or hotkeys. Skeletons can rarely spawn wearing them.
- Flute: Plays songs. Can be used to command pets (sit/follow) from a distance. Songs can be recorded using the
/supplementaries recordcommand. - Bubble Blower: A novelty item that blows soap bubbles. Refilled using Soap.
- Altimeter: Displays current Y-level. Texture changes based on elevation and dimension.
Consumables & Projectiles
- Bomb: An explosive projectile that damages mobs but does not destroy blocks (except grass/flowers). Blue Bombs are more powerful and inflict Weakness.
- Soap: Used to clean dyed items (Wool, Glass, Shulker Boxes) back to their default state. Can also clean oxidation from Copper.
- Pancake: A stackable food item. Can be placed as a block or inserted into a Jukebox to play music.
- Candy: Provides a short Speed effect when eaten.
- Rope Arrow: Deploys a rope coil wherever it lands, allowing for quick vertical traversal.
Mobs & Entities#
Red Merchant
The Red Merchant is a rare, hostile variant of the Wandering Trader. It spawns more frequently as the player progresses through the game (based on days passed and milestones). Unlike the standard trader, it is hostile and will throw Bombs at players. It sells explosive-related items, including Bombs, Blue Bombs, and Gunpowder.
Fireflies (Legacy/1.16)
In older versions, Fireflies were ambient mobs that spawned in swamps. In newer versions, they are primarily represented as items or particles, though they can still be captured in Jars.
Captured Mobs
Small mobs can be captured using Cages or Jars.
- Cages: Capture medium-small mobs like Chickens, Parrots, Rabbits, and even Villager babies. Chickens in cages will continue to lay eggs.
- Jars: Capture tiny mobs like Bees, Silverfish, Endermites, and Slimes. Captured mobs do not age and often have custom idle animations while inside their container.
World Generation#
Supplementaries adds several structures and plants to the Overworld to make exploration more rewarding.
- Way Signs: Small wooden structures found along paths. They feature Sign Posts that point toward the nearest Village or other man-made structures. Players can use a Compass on them to set a custom destination.
- Cave Urns: Found deep underground. When broken, they drop loot such as Ash, Bones, Ores, or rarely, Bombs and Enchanted Gear. Loot quality is affected by the Fortune enchantment.
- Wild Flax: Grows along bodies of water in arid biomes (Deserts, Savannas). Harvesting it yields Flax Seeds and Flax, which is essential for crafting Ropes and Sacks.
- Ash: Created when blocks burn or dropped by burning mobs. Found naturally in Basalt Deltas. Used to craft Soap.
Mechanics & Systems#
Soft Fluids
This system allows Jars and Goblets to hold liquids that aren't traditional "Forge Fluids."
- Capacity: 1 unit = 1 Bottle (250mB). Jars hold 12 units; Goblets hold 1 unit.
- Supported Liquids: Potions, Milk, Honey, Stews, and many modded drinks.
- Interactions: Fluids can be drunk directly from the container. Lava in a Jar emits light level 15.
Map Markers
Players can add custom markers to Maps by right-clicking specific blocks with a Map in hand. Supported blocks include:
- Beacons, Beds, Signposts, Nether Portals, Bells, Campfires, Conduits, and Flags.
- If the block is renamed in an Anvil, the name will appear on the Map.
Mob Head Shaders
Wearing a Mob Head (Creeper, Zombie, Skeleton, etc.) applies a unique post-processing shader to the player's vision, mimicking how that mob "sees" the world (e.g., green tint for Creepers, desaturation for Zombies).
Ropes & Chains
Ropes can be climbed like ladders and can be deployed downward automatically using a Pulley. They connect to Fences and Wall Lanterns with realistic knots.
Configuration & Datapacks#
Supplementaries is designed for extreme customization.
Config Files
Located in /configs/, the mod uses three main files (merged in 1.20+):
- supplementaries-common.toml: Logic settings, optional features (XP bottling, colored blackboards).
- supplementaries-client.toml: Visual settings and UI tweaks.
- supplementaries-registry.toml: Used to disable specific blocks or items entirely.
Datapack Customization
Almost every system in the mod can be expanded via JSON files in a datapack:
- cage_catchable / jar_catchable: Entity tags to whitelist mobs for capture.
- soft_fluids: Define new liquids for Jars and Goblets, including food properties and textures.
- hourglass_dusts: Define how long a specific item takes to fall through an Hourglass.
- flute_songs: Add custom songs recorded in-game.
- captured_mobs_properties: Adjust the rendering size, light level, or loot drops of mobs inside containers.
