Overview#

Vanilla Vistas is a specialized world generation preset designed for the Open Terrain Generator (OTG) engine. Unlike traditional mods that add new blocks or items, Vanilla Vistas focuses on a complete overhaul of the Minecraft world's shape, height, and biome distribution. It aims to provide a "Vanilla+" experience, where the world feels more picturesque and realistic—featuring rolling hills, gradually sloping mountains, and vast flatlands—without losing the core identity of the base game.

Key features include:

  • Realistic Terrain: Smooth transitions between biomes and more natural height variations.
  • Custom Objects: Replaces standard vanilla trees, rocks, and lakes with high-quality custom models (BO3 objects).
  • Modded Biome Support: In version 1.16.5, it automatically integrates biomes from other Forge mods into its climate-based generation system.
  • Vanilla Compatibility: Uses only vanilla blocks, ensuring that the world remains compatible with vanilla clients (when used on a Paper server) and maintains standard ore and structure generation.

World Presets#

Vanilla Vistas offers two distinct world generation modes to suit different playstyles. These can be selected during world creation or configured in server settings.

Preset Name Terrain Style Best For
Vanilla Vistas (Normal) Features rolling hills, gentle slopes, and realistic mountain ranges. Focuses on aesthetics and ease of travel. Survival, Base Building, Exploration
Vanilla Vistas (Amplified) Features aggressive height increases and dramatic cliffs. Designed to be more challenging while minimizing floating islands. Hardcore Survival, Scenic Vistas

Biome Placement & Climate Groups#

The mod completely replaces the vanilla biome generator. Instead of random placement, biomes are organized into Climate Groups. This ensures that snowy biomes do not generate directly next to deserts, creating a more immersive world map.

Climate Categories

  1. Snowy: Frozen Oceans, Snowy Tundra, Snowy Taiga.
  2. Cool: Taiga, Giant Tree Taiga, Extreme Hills.
  3. Warm: Forests, Plains, Birch Forests, Swamps.
  4. Hot: Deserts, Savannas, Jungles, Badlands.

Modded Biome Integration (1.16.5+)

In the 1.16.5 version, Vanilla Vistas uses the Forge Biome Dictionary to automatically sort modded biomes (from mods like Biomes O' Plenty or Oh The Biomes You'll Go) into these climate groups. This allows players to enjoy custom terrain with a massive variety of modded flora and environments without manual configuration.

Custom Objects (BO3)#

One of the most significant visual changes in Vanilla Vistas is the replacement of vanilla "decorations" with Custom Objects (BO3). These are pre-built structures made of vanilla blocks that OTG spawns during world generation.

  • Trees: Features hundreds of custom tree models, including massive oaks, realistic pines, and sprawling jungle canopies. These trees are designed to look more natural than the standard procedural vanilla trees.
  • Rocks & Boulders: Scattered throughout the landscape are custom rock formations and boulders made of stone, andesite, and granite, adding texture to plains and mountains.
  • Lakes & Springs: Small, naturally shaped ponds and water features replace the often-clunky vanilla water pockets.
  • Coastal Features: Includes coastal rocks, idyllic beaches, and stone shores that transition smoothly into the ocean.

Structures & Resources#

Vanilla Vistas preserves all standard Minecraft gameplay elements while improving their context within the world.

Structures

All vanilla structures spawn in their appropriate biomes, often benefiting from the flatter terrain provided for villages.

  • Villages: Spawn more frequently on flat plains or gentle slopes, reducing the occurrence of "glitched" houses on steep cliffs.
  • Strongholds & Dungeons: Generate at standard depths and frequencies.
  • Mineshafts & Ravines: Integrated into the overhauled underground carvers.

Ore Generation

Ore distribution remains identical to vanilla Minecraft. Players do not need to adjust their mining strategies. Compatibility with modded ores (Copper, Tin, etc.) is handled automatically via OTG's resource injection system, provided the ores are configured to spawn in the overworld.

Installation Guide#

Vanilla Vistas requires Open Terrain Generator (OTG) to function. Follow these steps for a successful installation.

Single Player (Forge)

  1. Install the recommended version of Forge for 1.16.5 or 1.12.2.
  2. Download the OTG.jar file and the Vanilla Vistas.jar file.
  3. Place both files into your .minecraft/mods folder.
  4. Launch Minecraft and select Single Player -> Create New World.
  5. Go to More World Options and cycle the World Type until you see World Type: OTG.
  6. Click Customize and select Vanilla Vistas from the menu.
  7. Click Create New World.

Multiplayer (Forge Server)

  1. Install the Forge server jar in your server folder.
  2. Place the OTG and Vanilla Vistas jars in the mods folder.
  3. Run the server once to generate the configuration files, then stop it.
  4. Open server.properties and set the following:
    • level-type=otg
    • generator-settings=VanillaVistas (or VanillaVistasAmplified for the amplified version)
  5. Delete the existing world folder and restart the server.

Multiplayer (Paper/Spigot Server)

  1. Place the OTG jar in the plugins folder.
  2. Place the Vanilla Vistas jar in the plugins/OpenTerrainGenerator/Presets folder.
  3. In bukkit.yml, add the following:
    worlds:
    world_name:
    generator: OpenTerrainGenerator:VanillaVistas
  4. Restart the server.

Mechanics & Configuration#

Vanilla Vistas leverages OTG's advanced mechanics to provide a seamless experience.

Performance Optimization

Because Vanilla Vistas uses vanilla blocks and optimized BO3 objects, it generally performs better than other heavy world-gen mods. However, it is recommended to allocate at least 2GB-4GB of RAM to the client or server for smooth chunk loading.

Key Configuration Files

Users can find configuration files in the /config/OpenTerrainGenerator/Presets/VanillaVistas/ folder:

  • WorldConfig.ini: Controls global settings like sea level, cloud height, and structure frequency.
  • BiomeConfigs: Individual .bc files for every biome, allowing you to customize grass colors, foliage density, and which custom objects spawn.

Commands

OTG provides several commands to help manage Vanilla Vistas worlds:

  • /otg map [size] [filename]: Generates a top-down map of the world biomes.
  • /otg tp [biome_name]: Teleports the player to the nearest instance of a specific biome.
  • /otg info: Displays technical information about the biome the player is currently standing in.
