Ceramics Mod Wiki

Ceramics is a comprehensive Minecraft mod that expands the utility of clay, providing early-game tools, armor, and advanced fluid management systems alongside a vast array of decorative blocks.

Overview#

Ceramics is designed to bridge the gap in early-game progression by making clay a primary resource for essential gear. Originally inspired by the clay bucket from Iguana Tinker Tweaks, the mod has evolved into a full-featured expansion that includes tools, armor, fluid storage, and a wide variety of aesthetic blocks. It is particularly useful in survival scenarios where iron or leather is scarce, allowing players to craft functional equipment using easily accessible river clay.

Beyond the early game, Ceramics introduces Porcelain, a high-tier ceramic material that is heat-resistant and highly decorative. This material forms the basis for advanced fluid transport systems and vibrant, pastel-colored building blocks that complement vanilla terracotta and concrete.

Items#

Tools and Utility

  • Clay Bucket (Unfired & Fired): A cheaper alternative to the iron bucket. While it can carry water and milk indefinitely, carrying hot fluids like lava will cause the bucket to 'crack' upon emptying.
  • Cracked Clay Bucket: Created after pouring lava out of a standard Clay Bucket. It can be used one more time to pick up a fluid but will break permanently once emptied. It can be repaired in a crafting grid using a single clay ball.
  • Clay Shears: Early-game shears made from clay. They have lower durability than iron shears but are functional for harvesting wool, leaves, and vines.
  • Porcelain: A refined crafting ingredient made by combining clay with bone meal or nether quartz. It is used to create heat-resistant blocks and fluid components.

Clay Armor

Ceramics adds a full set of Terracotta Plate Armor. This armor is designed to be accessible before the player finds iron or enough leather for a full set.

Piece Protection Durability Crafting Material
Clay Helmet 1 Armor Low 5 Clay Balls (Unfired)
Clay Chestplate 3 Armor Low 8 Clay Balls (Unfired)
Clay Leggings 2 Armor Low 7 Clay Balls (Unfired)
Clay Boots 1 Armor Low 4 Clay Balls (Unfired)

Note: All armor pieces must be fired in a furnace after crafting the 'unfired' version.

Blocks#

Fluid Management

  • Cisterns (Barrels): Vertical fluid storage blocks. They come in 16 colors for both Clay and Porcelain variants.
    • Clay Cistern: Holds 4 buckets of fluid. Cracks if filled with hot fluids.
    • Porcelain Cistern: Holds 6 buckets of fluid. Heat-resistant and safe for lava.
    • Stacking: Cisterns can be stacked vertically. Placing an 'extension' (a cistern without a bottom) on top of a base cistern increases the total capacity of the multiblock structure.
  • Faucets: Attached to the side of tanks or cisterns. Right-clicking or applying a redstone signal causes the faucet to pour fluid into the block directly below it.
  • Channels: Used to transport fluids horizontally. They can be configured to flow in specific directions by right-clicking the sides. They can also pour fluid downwards into tanks or other channels.
  • Gauges: A decorative and functional block that can be placed on the side of any fluid container. Right-clicking the gauge displays the name and exact amount of fluid stored inside.

Decorative Blocks

  • Porcelain Blocks: Available in 16 pastel colors. These blocks have a smoother, cleaner texture than standard terracotta.
  • Fancy Bricks: Ceramics adds several unique brick variants, each with matching stairs, slabs, and walls:
    • Dark Bricks: A deep, burnt-red brick style.
    • Marine Bricks: Teal-toned bricks suitable for aquatic builds.
    • Golden Bricks: Bricks with gold-inlaid patterns.
    • Dragon Bricks: Dark, ender-themed bricks.
    • Lava Bricks: Bricks that appear to have glowing embers within.
  • Rainbow Clay & Bricks: Special blocks with an animated, cycling rainbow texture. These are crafted using multiple dyes and provide a unique aesthetic for builds.

Mechanics#

Firing Process

Almost every functional item and block in Ceramics begins as an Unfired version. Unfired items (like buckets and armor) cannot be used and must be smelted in a furnace to become functional 'Fired' or 'Terracotta' versions. Unfired blocks can be placed in the world but will break instantly if they attempt to hold fluid.

Fluid Logistics

  1. Extraction: Use a Faucet on the side of a cistern or tank. It will pour fluid at a steady rate until the destination is full or the source is empty.
  2. Transport: Channels act as open-topped pipes. They do not 'suck' fluid; they must be fed by a faucet. You can change the flow direction of a channel by right-clicking its sides with an empty hand.
  3. Heat Sensitivity: Standard clay components (Clay Buckets, Clay Cisterns) are sensitive to heat. While they can hold lava, they will eventually crack or break. Porcelain components are completely immune to heat damage and should be used for long-term lava or molten metal storage.
