Overview#
Advanced Generators is a modular multiblock mod created by bdew that focuses on free-form power generation. Unlike traditional single-block generators, this mod allows players to assemble various components—such as turbines, capacitors, and fuel tanks—into a single functional unit of any shape.
The mod features four primary multiblock machines:
- Gas Turbine Generator: Converts liquid fuels (like Syngas, Ethylene, or Biofuel) into power.
- Steam Turbine Generator: Converts Steam into power.
- Syngas Producer: Converts solid carbon sources (like Coal or Charcoal) and Water/Steam into Syngas fluid.
- Heat Exchanger: Transfers heat between fluids, such as cooling Lava into Obsidian to produce Steam.
These machines are highly compatible with other major tech mods, supporting power systems like Forge Energy (FE), Redstone Flux (RF), and IndustrialCraft 2's Energy Units (EU).
Multiblock Construction#
Building a machine in Advanced Generators follows a "free-form" logic. As long as all blocks in the structure are touching at least one other block of the same multiblock, the machine will function. There are no strict rectangular requirements.
Construction Rules
- Controller Requirement: Every multiblock must contain exactly one Controller block (e.g., Gas Turbine Controller).
- Module Connectivity: All modules must be adjacent to the controller or another connected module.
- Validation: Right-clicking the Controller will open the GUI if the structure is valid. If invalid, it will often display a tooltip indicating what is missing (e.g., "Missing Turbine").
- Input/Output: Valves and ports can be placed anywhere on the structure to facilitate fluid, item, or energy transfer.
Gas Turbine Generator#
The Gas Turbine Generator is the flagship machine of the mod. It burns liquid fuels to spin turbines and generate electricity. Its efficiency can be significantly improved using specialized upgrade modules.
Required Components
- 1x Gas Turbine Controller: The brain of the machine.
- 1-50x Turbines: Determines the power output (RF/t).
- 1+ Fuel Tank: Stores liquid fuel.
- 1+ Power Capacitor: Stores generated energy.
- 1+ Fluid Intake Valve: For piping in fuel.
- 1+ Energy Output (Flux Generator/Emitter): For extracting power.
Efficiency Upgrades
Efficiency can be boosted beyond the base 100% using:
- Fuel/Air Mixer: Increases efficiency to 135%.
- Gas Mix Compressor: Further increases efficiency to 185%.
Common Fuels
| Fuel Type | Energy Density (RF/mB) |
|---|---|
| Ethylene (Mekanism) | 6,000 |
| Rocket Fuel (Ender IO) | 1,120 |
| Syngas (Advanced Generators) | 1,000 |
| Liquifacted Coal (Thermal Expansion) | 1,000 |
| Biofuel (Forestry/MFR) | 800 |
| Hydrogen (Mekanism) | 43.24 |
Steam Turbine Generator#
The Steam Turbine Generator functions similarly to the Gas Turbine but utilizes Steam as its primary resource. It is ideal for players who have external steam production from mods like Railcraft, Mekanism, or the mod's own Heat Exchanger.
Mechanics
- Steam Consumption: The machine consumes steam relative to the energy demand. If no power is being drawn, no steam is consumed.
- Conversion Rate: By default, 1 mB of Steam produces 2 RF.
- Components: Requires a Steam Turbine Controller, Turbines, Capacitors, and a Fluid Intake Valve for Steam.
Syngas Producer#
The Syngas Producer is a utility multiblock that creates Syngas, a high-efficiency liquid fuel. It requires a carbon source and either Water (with Heating Chambers) or Steam.
Components
- Syngas Producer Controller: Manages the process.
- Heating Chamber (0-10): Uses carbon to generate heat. Once above 150°C, it produces steam from water.
- Mixing Chamber (1-25): Combines carbon and steam to create Syngas.
- Item Input Port: For solid fuels (Coal, Charcoal, etc.).
- Fluid Intake/Output: For water/steam input and syngas output.
Carbon Values
| Item | Carbon Value (mB) |
|---|---|
| Block of Coal | 16,000 |
| Coal / Charcoal | 1,600 |
| Coke (Railcraft) | 3,200 |
| Pellets (IC2) | 6,400 |
Optimal Ratio
For maximum efficiency, use a ratio of 1 Heating Chamber to 5 Mixing Chambers. Adding more heating chambers speeds up the initial warm-up but slightly reduces long-term efficiency.
Heat Exchanger#
The Heat Exchanger transfers thermal energy between two fluids. Its most common use is generating Steam by cooling Lava.
Mechanics
- Heat Units (HU): The internal temperature of the exchanger. It must be above 150 HU to operate.
- Exchanger Modules: Each module increases the maximum heat transfer rate by 16 HU/t.
- Lava Cooling: Consuming 1 mB of Lava produces 30 HU and results in Obsidian (output via Item Output Port).
- Water Heating: Consuming 3 HU and 5 mB of Water produces 15 mB of Steam.
Components
- Heat Exchanger Controller
- 1-50x Heat Exchanger Modules
- Fluid Intake/Output Valves
- Item Output Port (to collect Obsidian from Lava cooling)
Modules and Components#
The mod provides a variety of modules to customize your power plants. Most modules are tiered, offering better performance at higher costs.
Turbines
Turbines determine the maximum power generation rate (RF/t or FE/t).
- Iron Turbine: 100 RF/t
- Gold Turbine: 150 RF/t
- Steel/Bronze Turbine: 200 RF/t
- Diamond Turbine: 500 RF/t
- Advanced Alloy Turbine: 1,000 RF/t
Capacitors
Capacitors determine the internal energy buffer of the generator.
- Basic Capacitor: 1,000,000 RF
- Advanced Capacitor: 5,000,000 RF
- Elite/High Density Capacitor: 25,000,000 RF
Utility Modules
- Sensor Module: Emits a redstone signal based on internal states (e.g., fuel level < 5%, energy full).
- Control Module: Allows redstone signals to enable or disable the machine.
- Fluid Intake Valve: Accepts fluids from pipes.
- Fluid Output Valve: Outputs fluids (like Syngas or Steam).
- Flux Generator: Outputs RF/FE power.
- EU Emitter (LV/MV/HV/EV): Outputs IndustrialCraft 2 power in specific voltage tiers.
Items and Upgrades#
Beyond blocks, the mod includes items for maintenance and upgrading.
Upgrade Kits
Upgrade kits allow players to upgrade existing modules within a multiblock without breaking the structure.
- Usage: Shift+Right-click the kit on the specific module (like a Capacitor or Turbine) within the multiblock to upgrade it to the next tier.
- Types: Available for all Turbine and Capacitor tiers.
Crafting Components
Most blocks require a Generator Frame or Iron Frame as a base component. These are typically crafted using Iron Ingots and Iron Bars.
Mechanics and Configuration#
Advanced Generators is highly configurable, allowing modpack authors to add custom fuels or change energy values.
Energy Systems
The mod natively supports Forge Energy (FE), which is functionally identical to Redstone Flux (RF). When IndustrialCraft 2 is present, it also supports Energy Units (EU). The conversion ratio is typically 4 RF: 1 EU.
Redstone Integration
Using the Sensor Module, players can automate their power plants. Available conditions include:
- Fuel Level: Signal based on percentage of fuel stored.
- Energy Level: Signal based on percentage of energy stored.
- Machine State: Signal if the machine is active or throttled.
- Output Rate: Signal based on current power generation.
