Overview#
Cavern II is the successor to the original Cavern mod, significantly expanding the underground experience. It adds several distinct dimensions, each with its own theme, environmental hazards, and exclusive resources. The mod is centered around a Mining Rank system where players earn points by mining ores, unlocking new abilities like Mining Assist and access to deeper, more dangerous dimensions.
Key features include:
- Multiple Dimensions: From flooded caves to massive open caverns and fantasy-themed mirage worlds.
- Mining Rank System: Progression-based rewards and dimension access.
- Mining Assist: A built-in vein-mining mechanic unlocked through gameplay.
- Unique Ores: New materials like Aquamarine, Magnite, and Hexcite with specialized properties.
- Cavenic Mobs: Enhanced versions of vanilla monsters found deep within the caverns.
Dimensions & Portals#
To enter the dimensions of Cavern II, players must construct a portal frame and use a specific trigger item. Frames can be made of Mossy Cobblestone or Mossy Stone Bricks, with a minimum size of 4x5 and a maximum of 23x23.
Primary Dimensions
| Dimension | Trigger Item | Required Rank | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cavern | Emerald | Beginner | A standard cave dimension with infinite tunnels and vanilla-like generation. |
| Huge Cavern | Diamond | Iron Miner | A massive, open-air cave system where ores are easily visible on the surface. |
| Aqua Cavern | Aquamarine | Aqua Miner | A completely flooded dimension. Requires water-breathing gear or Aquamarine tools. |
Mirage Worlds
Mirage Worlds are specialized dimensions accessed by using a Mirage Book on a portal frame. These books are found in Mirage Libraries located within the standard Cavern dimension (typically between Y:24 and Y:30).
- Caveland: A lush, forest-like cave dimension filled with flora like Acresia plants. It resembles a surface world trapped underground.
- Cavenia: A combat-focused dimension that serves as a nest for Cavenic monsters. It features a unique Hunting Rank system.
- Frozen Mountains: A cold, mountainous cave world covered in ice and snow.
- Wide Desert: An expansive, sandy cavern system.
- The Void: A dark, empty dimension for advanced players.
- Dark Forest: A dense, shadowy forest cavern.
Mining Rank & Mechanics#
The core progression of Cavern II is the Mining Rank. As you mine ores in any Cavern dimension, you accumulate Mining Points.
Mining Ranks
- Beginner: Starting rank. Access to the basic Cavern.
- Iron Miner (100 pts): Unlocks the Huge Cavern and the Mining Assist ability.
- Aqua Miner (300 pts): Unlocks the Aqua Cavern and allows for easier movement/mining in water.
- Gold Miner: Increased efficiency and bonus rewards.
- Diamond Miner: Maximum efficiency and access to top-tier rewards.
Mining Assist
Unlocked at the Iron Miner rank, Mining Assist allows you to mine multiple blocks at once. You can toggle this ability and switch modes using the V key (default).
- Normal: Standard mining.
- Vein: Mines all connected ores of the same type.
- Under: Mines blocks in a vertical line downwards.
Mining Combo & Criticals
- Mining Combo: Mining blocks in quick succession builds a combo meter, granting bonus points and temporary speed buffs.
- Critical Mining: There is a random chance to trigger a "Critical Mine," which yields significantly more drops from a single ore block.
Ores & Materials#
Cavern II introduces several new ores found across its dimensions. Each has specific tool requirements and uses.
| Ore | Mining Level | Found In | Uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aquamarine | Stone | Aqua Cavern | Portal trigger, Aquamarine tools (fast underwater). |
| Magnite | Iron | Huge Cavern | Magnite tools (extremely fast, high damage, 10 durability). |
| Hexcite | Iron | Cavenia / Caveland | Hexcite tools/armor (Diamond-tier durability and strength). |
| Randomite | Stone | All Dimensions | Drops a random item (vanilla or modded) when mined. |
| Fissured Stone | N/A | All Dimensions | Squirts random potion effects when broken. |
Mobs#
The dimensions are inhabited by Cavenic variants of vanilla mobs. These creatures are generally stronger and have higher health than their Overworld counterparts.
- Cavenic Skeleton: Equipped with a rapid-fire bow. High agility.
- Cavenic Zombie: Has 60 HP (30 hearts) and deals increased melee damage.
- Cavenic Creeper: Features a larger explosion radius and shorter fuse time.
- Cavenic Spider: Faster than normal spiders and can inflict various debuffs.
- Cavenic Witch: Throws enhanced potions and has a higher chance to drop magical items or Mirage Books.
Items & Equipment#
Specialized Tools
- Aquamarine Tools: These tools do not suffer the mining speed penalty when used underwater, making them essential for the Aqua Cavern.
- Magnite Tools: These have the highest attack and mining speed in the mod (even faster than Gold), but only have 10 durability. They are best used for boss fights or clearing specific hard blocks.
- Hexcite Gear: Provides high protection and durability, comparable to or slightly better than Diamond.
Utility Items
- Miner's Orb: An item that can store and display your current Mining Points and Rank.
- Cave Map: A specialized map that works specifically within the verticality of the Cavern dimensions.
- Mirage Book: Used to trigger portals to Mirage Worlds. Found in Mirage Libraries.
- Acresia Fruit: Harvested from Acresia plants in Caveland; provides high saturation and nourishment.

The mod includes several commands for administrative use or player utility:
