Overview#
Creeper Spores is a unique gameplay mod that explores the theory of Creepers being plant-like organisms. It fundamentally changes how Creepers interact with the world, shifting their primary threat from terrain destruction to biological infestation. When a Creeper explodes, it no longer simply destroys blocks; instead, it releases a cloud of spores that can infect nearby entities and eventually lead to the birth of a new generation of Creepers.
This mod is designed to make Creepers more interesting and slightly less frustrating for players who prefer to keep their builds intact, while adding a layer of ecological depth to the game's most famous monster.
Mobs#
The mod introduces a new juvenile stage for the Creeper and modifies the attributes of the adult form to align with their new plant-based lore.
Creeperling
Creeperlings are the baby form of Creepers. They are small, relatively harmless, and possess several unique behaviors that distinguish them from their adult counterparts.
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 10 (5 Hearts) |
| Behavior | Passive / Fleeing |
| Growth Requirement | Sunlight |
| Temptation Item | Bone Meal |
- Behavior: Creeperlings are naturally timid. They will flee from players and are terrified of Cats and Ocelots. Unlike adults, they do not explode on their own.
- Predation: Due to their plant-like nature, Creeperlings share characteristics with catnip. This makes them the natural prey of Cats and Ocelots, who will actively hunt them down.
- Spawning: Creeperlings have a 20% chance to replace a normal Creeper when spawning naturally on the surface. They can also be summoned by using a Creeper Spawn Egg on an adult Creeper or another Creeperling in Creative Mode.
Adult Creeper
While adult Creepers retain their iconic look and hostile nature, they have been updated with new biological traits.
- Fire Vulnerability: As they are composed of dry, plant-like material, adult Creepers and Creeperlings take double damage from fire and lava.
- Spore Dispersal: The primary function of an adult's explosion is now the spreading of the "Creeper Spores" status effect rather than terrain griefing (depending on configuration).
Mechanics#
The core of the mod revolves around the life cycle of the Creeper and the new status effect introduced to facilitate their reproduction.
Creeper Spores Effect
When a Creeper explodes, all entities caught within the blast radius are afflicted with the Creeper Spores status effect. This effect acts as a carrier for the next generation.
- Spawning Chance: A Creeperling has a chance to spawn under three conditions:
- When the Creeper Spores effect duration expires.
- When the affected entity is hit by an attack.
- When the affected entity dies.
- Prevention: The effect can be removed by drinking milk, preventing the potential spawn of a Creeperling.
Growth and Taming
Creeperlings are not permanent babies; they are part of a growing ecosystem.
- Natural Growth: Creeperlings require sunlight to mature into adult Creepers. If kept in the dark, their growth will be stunted.
- Bone Meal: Players can use Bone Meal on a Creeperling to speed up its growth process.
- Taming/Trust: If you feed a Creeperling Bone Meal, it will begin to trust the player. A trusting Creeperling will stop fleeing from you and can be kept as a pet, provided you keep it away from direct sunlight to prevent it from maturing into a hostile adult.
- Following: Creeperlings are tempted by Bone Meal and will follow any player holding it.
Configuration and Gamerules#
The mod provides several ways to customize the experience, primarily through the use of Gamerules and NBT tags.
Gamerules
These rules allow server administrators to define how much impact Creepers have on the world.
| Gamerule | Possible Values | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
creeper-spores:creeperGrief |
charged, never, vanilla |
charged |
Determines which Creepers can destroy blocks. |
creeper-spores:creeperReplaceChance |
0.0 to 1.0 | 0.2 |
The probability that a surface-spawned Creeper is a Creeperling. |
Griefing Modes Explained:
- charged: Only Charged Creepers will destroy terrain. Regular Creepers will only spread spores. This is the recommended setting for a balanced experience.
- never: No Creepers, including charged ones, can destroy terrain under any circumstances.
- vanilla: Creepers behave exactly as they do in standard Minecraft, destroying blocks and spreading spores simultaneously.
NBT Tags
For map makers and advanced users, individual Creepers can be modified using NBT data. By setting the boolean tag cspores:giveSpores to false, you can disable a specific Creeper's ability to spread spores upon exploding.
FAQ#
