Overview#
Witchery is a massive magic-themed mod for Minecraft that focuses on the natural world and the hidden arts of witchcraft. Unlike many 'flashy' magic mods, Witchery is deeply rooted in folklore, involving rituals, herbalism, brewing, and complex transformations. Players can become powerful witches or warlocks, master the art of voodoo, summon demons, or even transform into Vampires and Werewolves.
The mod introduces a unique power system called Altar Power, which draws energy from the surrounding nature (trees, plants, and crops) to fuel magical devices and rituals.
Getting Started: Herbalism and Mutandis#
The journey into Witchery begins with nature. Most magical components are derived from custom plants that must be grown and harvested.
Essential Plants
| Plant | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Mandrake | Used in many recipes; drops Mandrake Root. Beware: it screams when uprooted during the day, potentially killing the player. |
| Belladonna | Used for poisons and dark magic. |
| Water Artichoke | Grown on water; used for water-themed brews. |
| Wolfsbane | Essential for werewolf-related items and curing lycanthropy. |
| Snowbell | Used for ice magic and cold-themed recipes. |
Mutandis
Mutandis is the 'Bone Meal' of Witchery, but instead of growing plants, it mutates them. By using Mutandis on grass or tall grass, it will cycle through various vanilla and Witchery-specific plants, including saplings like Rowan, Alder, and Hawthorn.
Mutandis Recipe:
- 1x Mandrake Root
- 1x Exhaled Spirit
- 1x Egg
Altar Power and Core Blocks#
The Altar is the heart of any witch's workshop. It provides the energy (ME - Magic Energy) required for the Distillery, Kettle, and Circle Magic.
Building the Altar
The Altar is a 2x3 multiblock structure made of six Altar blocks. Once placed, it must be covered with a red, white, or purple carpet to function. Its power capacity and recharge rate are determined by the variety of nature nearby (leaves, grass, crops, wood).
Power Boosters
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| Arthana | Increases the range of the Altar. |
| Candelabra | Multiplies the recharge rate. |
| Chalice | Increases the total energy capacity. |
| Pentacle | Increases the speed of energy transfer. |
| Wither Skeleton Skull | Massive boost to capacity and recharge. |
Essential Machinery
- Witches' Oven: Used to smelt items and collect 'fumes' (like Foul Fume or Exhaled Spirit) using Clay Jars.
- Distillery: Uses Altar power to refine fumes and ingredients into complex magical reagents.
- Kettle: Used for brewing custom potions and 'Brew of Erosion' or 'Brew of Raising'.
- Spinning Wheel: Used to craft magical fabrics and webs.
Circle Magic and Rites#
Circle Magic is the most powerful aspect of Witchery. It involves drawing glyphs on the ground using Ritual Chalk and placing specific items in the center.
Types of Chalk
- Ritual Chalk: Used for basic white circles.
- Otherwhere Chalk: Used for purple teleportation and dimensional circles.
- Infernal Chalk: Used for red demonic and fire-based circles.
- Golden Chalk: Used for high-tier rituals.
Common Rituals
- Rite of Transposition: Teleports entities or items across long distances.
- Rite of Summoning: Brings demons, bosses, or specific mobs to the circle.
- Rite of Nature's Power: Can change the weather or time of day.
- Rite of Infusion: Infuses the player with permanent magical abilities (Light, Earth, Sky, or Infernal).
Mobs and Bosses#
Witchery adds several unique entities, ranging from helpful familiars to terrifying bosses.
Passive and Neutral Mobs
| Mob | Behavior | Drops |
|---|---|---|
| Owl | Can be tamed; carries items for the player. | Feathers |
| Toad | Can be tamed; used in brewing. | Toad Sweat |
| Mandragora | Aggressive when uprooted; screams to stun. | Mandrake Root |
Bosses
- Baba Yaga: A powerful witch found in her hut. She throws high-tier potions and summons cats. Drops the Baba Yaga's Hat.
- The Horned Huntsman: Summoned via a Wicker Man ritual. A fast, melee-focused boss. Drops the Horned Spear.
- Leonard: The master of brews. Summoned via a complex ritual. He uses a variety of magical effects. Drops Leonard's Urn.
- Lord of Torment: Found in the Torment dimension. A massive demon that requires specialized gear to defeat.
- Lilith: The mother of vampires, found in the upper reaches of the world or summoned. Essential for high-level Vampirism.
Vampirism and Lycanthropy#
Players can transcend humanity by becoming a Vampire or a Werewolf. Each path has 10 levels of progression.
Vampirism
- Becoming a Vampire: Requires a ritual involving a Glass Goblet and the blood of a vampire (or Lilith).
- Abilities: Super speed, night vision, flight (at higher levels), and immortality to most damage.
- Weaknesses: Sunlight (burns), Fire, and Garlic. Must consume blood to survive.
Lycanthropy
- Becoming a Werewolf: Requires being bitten by a wild werewolf or using a Curse of Lycanthropy ritual.
- Abilities: Transformation into a wolf or wolfman form, increased strength, and tracking abilities.
- Weaknesses: Silver weapons deal massive damage. Forced transformation during a full moon (unless controlled).
The Spirit World and Torment#
Witchery adds two unique dimensions that are accessed through non-traditional means.
The Spirit World
Accessed by drinking a Brew of Sleeping. The player leaves their physical body behind and enters a dream-like version of the Overworld.
- Mechanics: You cannot bring items in or out (except via specialized containers). You must gather 'Spirit' versions of items.
- Nightmares: If you stay too long or encounter a Nightmare mob, you may be forcibly woken up.
Torment
Accessed via a ritual or by being 'pulled' by a demon. It is a dark, labyrinthine dimension filled with traps and the Lord of Torment. Defeating the Lord is the only way to escape with his unique loot.
Voodoo and Poppets#
Poppets are small dolls that protect the player or allow them to manipulate others. To use a poppet on another player, you must obtain their Taglock (using a Taglock Kit on them or their bed).
Types of Poppets
- Death Protection Poppet: Prevents death once, consuming the poppet instead.
- Voodoo Poppet: Allows you to inflict damage, fire, or drowning on the target linked to the poppet.
- Vampiric Poppet: Transfers damage taken by the player to the linked target.
- Earth Bind Poppet: Prevents the target from jumping or flying.
Brewing and Alchemy#
The Witchery brewing system is much more complex than vanilla alchemy. Using the Kettle, players combine ingredients to create 'Brews' that can be bottled or turned into gas.
Notable Brews
- Brew of Web: Creates a mass of cobwebs on impact.
- Brew of Frost: Freezes water and encases enemies in ice.
- Brew of Love: Causes animals to enter breeding mode.
- Brew of Hollowing: Can clear out large areas of stone or dirt instantly.
