Overview#

Paintings ++ (also called Paintings) gives you full control over which painting appears on your wall. Normally the game picks a random painting when you place one; this mod instead opens an in-game selection screen so you can browse every available artwork and click exactly the one you want. It works with any resource pack that adds custom paintings, and is ideal for decorating houses, museums and art galleries.

The Painting Selection Screen#

When you place a painting item on a wall, a selection screen opens showing all available paintings as clickable thumbnails. The artworks are grouped by size, and the screen can display each painting's dimensions so you can pick one that fits the space you have. Simply click a thumbnail and that painting is placed instantly at the spot you were looking at, expanded to the largest size that fits. No more breaking and replacing a painting over and over to get the picture you wanted.

Cycling Paintings#

As an alternative to the selection screen, you can right-click with a painting item to cycle through the different available paintings. This is handy for quickly flipping between options. Cycling is controlled by a config toggle (see Configuration).

Resource Pack Support#

The mod is fully resource-pack friendly. Any custom paintings added by a resource pack are detected automatically and appear in the selection screen alongside the vanilla artworks, so you can build themed galleries using your favourite painting packs. If you prefer the classic look, an option lets you show only the vanilla paintings.

Configuration#

The mod exposes these options (editable in the config file, and in-game via the config screen where supported):

  • use_vanilla_only - when true, only the vanilla paintings are loaded and any extra/resource-pack paintings are skipped.
  • use_selection_gui - when true, the painting selection screen opens each time you place a painting.
  • cycle_paintings - when true, right-clicking with a painting item cycles through the available paintings.
  • show_painting_size - when true, the selection screen shows each painting's size (dimensions).

Usage & Tips#

  • Building a gallery or museum? Keep use_selection_gui on so you can place the perfect artwork on every wall.
  • Turn on show_painting_size to quickly find a painting that fits a specific wall.
  • Add a painting resource pack and its artworks show up automatically in the picker.
  • Prefer vanilla only? Enable use_vanilla_only.

Troubleshooting / FAQ#

The selection screen doesn't open. Make sure use_selection_gui is enabled in the config, and that you are placing the painting on a valid wall surface with enough space.

My custom paintings don't appear. Confirm the resource pack is enabled, and that use_vanilla_only is turned off.

Can I still place paintings the vanilla way? Yes - disable use_selection_gui to fall back to the default random placement.
