Overview#
The Overlord mod transforms the player into a commander of the undead. Unlike standard summoned mobs, the skeletons in this mod are permanent, customizable, and feature a deep progression system. Players can create various types of skeletons, equip them with armor and weapons, level them up using milk, and issue complex AI commands.

Key features include:
- Persistent Army: Skeletons do not despawn and can be assigned to squads.
- Leveling System: Skeletons gain experience through combat or by consuming milk, increasing their health and damage.
- AI Control: Fine-tune movement and attack behaviors for individuals or entire groups.
- Customization: Apply 'Skinsuits' to protect them from sunlight or 'Muscles' to boost physical stats.
Getting Started: Raising the Dead#
In modern versions (1.18.2 and 1.19.2), the process of raising a skeleton involves a ritual using a Casket and a Grave Marker rather than a single block interface.
The Ritual Process
- Prepare the Site: Dig a 2x2 area in the ground.
- Place the Casket: Craft a Casket and place it inside the 2x2 hole.
- Set the Marker: Place a Grave Marker on top of the Casket. Ensure the grave has a clear view of the sky.
- Add Ingredients: Right-click the Casket to add the necessary materials:
- 64 Bones: The physical framework.
- 2 Milk Buckets: To strengthen the bone structure.
- Equipment: Any armor or weapons you want the skeleton to spawn with.
- The Awakening: The skeleton will spawn automatically at Midnight (in-game time). To speed up the growth of a newly spawned skeleton, feed it additional milk.
The Overlord's Seal
Before your skeletons will obey you, you must craft an Overlord's Seal.
- Claiming: Hold the Seal and right-click. It will begin to glow, indicating it is bound to you.
- Usage: Any skeleton created while a bound Seal is in the Casket (or used on them) will recognize you as their master.
Undead Units#
There are three primary types of skeletons you can command, each with distinct roles and stats.
| Unit Type | Health (Base) | Behavior | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baby Skeleton | 8 HP | Melee Only | Small, fast, but fragile. Cannot use augments. |
| Skeleton Warrior | 16 HP+ | Melee/Ranged | The core unit. Can level up infinitely and use all equipment. |
| Converted Skeleton | 20 HP | Melee/Ranged | Created by curing a vanilla skeleton. Cannot level up. |
Converted Skeletons
To obtain a Converted Skeleton, you must follow a process similar to curing a Zombie Villager:
- Trap a standard vanilla Skeleton.
- Splash it with a Potion of Weakness.
- Feed it a Golden Apple.
- Once cured, it will become a loyal (though non-leveling) soldier in your army.
Items and Tools#
Essential Tools
- Overlord's Seal: The primary control item. It has unlimited uses and allows you to access the army's global AI settings.
- Overlord's Stamp: A cheaper, single-use version of the Seal used to claim individual skeletons.
- Orders Wand: Used to issue commands to all nearby skeletons simultaneously. Right-click to open the mass-command GUI.
- Squad Editor: A book used to organize your skeletons into up to five distinct squads for easier management.
Consumables
- Milk Bottle: Crafted by right-clicking a cow with a glass bottle. Used to heal skeletons (Shift+Right-click) or level them up via their inventory.
- Skinsuit: Crafted from leather or phantom membranes. Applying this to a skeleton prevents them from burning in sunlight and gives them a human-like appearance.
- Muscles: Crafted from raw meat. Increases a skeleton's attack power, speed, and toughness.
Mechanics and AI#
AI Modes
Each skeleton (or squad) can be configured with specific movement and combat behaviors via the Overlord's Seal or Orders Wand.
Movement Modes:
- Stationary: The skeleton stays exactly where it is placed.
- Follow: The skeleton follows the player like a pet wolf.
- Wander: The skeleton moves freely within a 32-block radius of the location where the command was issued.
Attack Modes:
- Aggressive: Attacks any hostile mobs or players not in an alliance.
- Defensive: Only attacks entities that strike it or its master.
- Passive: Will not attack under any circumstances.
Leveling and Healing
Skeletons gain experience by killing mobs. However, the most efficient way to power them up is through Milk.
- Leveling: Place Milk Buckets or Milk Bottles in the skeleton's inventory. They will consume them to gain XP. Higher levels require significantly more milk.
- Healing: Skeletons do not regenerate health naturally. You must manually heal them by throwing Milk Bottles at them or Shift-right-clicking them with milk.
Augments
By placing specific blocks in the 'Augment' slot of a Skeleton Warrior's inventory, you can grant them special properties:
- Coal Block: 95% Fire Resistance.
- Obsidian: Resistance and Fire Resistance, but grants Slowness.
- Glass: 75% Magic Resistance, but increases damage taken from explosions and projectiles by 50%.
- Iron Ingot: Standard Resistance buff.
Crafting Recipes#
Most recipes in the Overlord mod utilize vanilla materials like bones, iron, and gold.
| Item | Recipe Components |
|---|---|
| Overlord's Seal | 4 Gold Ingots, 4 Iron Ingots, 1 Diamond |
| Casket | 8 Wood Planks (any type) surrounding an empty center |
| Grave Marker | 3 Wood Slabs (top row), 2 Fences (middle and bottom center) |
| Milk Bottle | 1 Glass Bottle (Right-click cow) |
| Skinsuit | 8 Leather or 8 Phantom Membranes |
| Orders Wand | 2 Sticks, 1 Gold Ingot, 1 Overlord's Seal |
(Note: Recipes may vary slightly depending on the specific sub-version of 1.18.2 or 1.19.2 installed; use JEI/REI for real-time verification.)
Commands and Alliances#
The mod includes a built-in alliance system to prevent your skeletons from attacking your friends.
/alliance create [name]- Creates a new alliance group./alliance invite [player]- Invites another player to your alliance./alliance accept [name]- Joins an alliance you were invited to./alliance list- Shows all current members of your alliance.
Members of the same alliance will be ignored by each other's skeletons, allowing for massive co-op undead armies.
