Overview#
Utility Mobs, created by Father Toast, is a defensive mod designed to help players protect their bases from hostile entities. It introduces a wide array of player-built mobs, including various tiers of golems, stationary turrets with upgradeable capabilities, and 'Block Golems'—utility blocks like chests and crafting tables that can walk and follow the player.
Most mobs in this mod are built by placing specific blocks in the world in a configuration similar to the vanilla Iron Golem or Snow Golem. The mod also features a robust targeting and permission system managed through in-game manuals, allowing players to fine-tune exactly what their defenses should attack.
Utility Golems#
Utility Golems are mobile defenders that wander or stand guard to attack hostile mobs. They are built by stacking blocks and placing a Pumpkin on top.
Golem Varieties
| Golem Type | Building Pattern | Health | Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone Golem | 2 Cobblestone (vertical) + Pumpkin | 10 HP | Basic, slow defender. Mass-producible. |
| Large Stone Golem | 3 Cobblestone (vertical) + Pumpkin | 16 HP | Tougher and larger than the standard Stone Golem. |
| Obsidian Golem | 2 Obsidian (vertical) + Pumpkin | 100 HP | Extremely durable; reduces incoming damage by 80% and is fire-immune. |
| Armor Golem | 2 Iron Blocks (vertical) + Pumpkin | 40 HP | Can be equipped with armor and weapons by right-clicking. |
| Gilded Armor Golem | 2 Gold Blocks (vertical) + Pumpkin | 30 HP | Faster than the Armor Golem; can also be equipped with gear. |
| Scarecrow | 1 Fence + Pumpkin | 10 HP | Does not attack but scares away Creepers within a small radius. |
| Bound Soul | 2 Soul Sand (vertical) + Pumpkin | 20 HP | A flying defender that can be equipped with armor and weapons. |
| Steam Golem | 1 Cobble + 1 Furnace + Pumpkin | 20 HP | Powered by fuel; faster and stronger than stone variants. |
| Melon Golem | 2 Melon Blocks + Pumpkin | 8 HP | Weak, but easy to build in large numbers. |
Colossal Golems
Colossal Golems are massive versions of the Stone, Obsidian, and Armor golems. They are built using Creeper Heads (rarely dropped by Creepers) as the head block instead of a Pumpkin. These giants can be ridden by the player or smaller golems, acting as mobile fortresses.
Automated Turrets#
Turrets are stationary defensive structures that automatically fire projectiles at targets. They are built using a specific vertical stack: Fence + Block + Fence + Dispenser.
Turret Types
| Turret Type | Base Block | Projectile | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snow Turret | Snow Block | Snowballs | Low damage, high knockback. |
| Stone Turret | Cobblestone | Arrows | Basic defense; slow fire rate. |
| Stone Brick Turret | Stone Bricks | Arrows | Faster and more accurate than the Stone Turret. |
| Obsidian Turret | Obsidian | Arrows | 100 HP; uses Nether Brick Fences; fire-immune. |
| Fireball Turret | Redstone Block | Fire Charges | Sets targets on fire; does not deal impact damage. |
| Ghast Turret | Nether Quartz | Fireballs | Fires explosive Ghast fireballs; requires Nether Brick Fences. |
| Sniper Turret | Lapis Block | Arrows | Extreme range (20+ blocks) and high accuracy. |
| Shotgun Turret | Iron Block | Arrows | Fires 6 arrows per shot in a wide spread. |
| Gatling Turret | Gold Block | Arrows | Extremely high fire rate (2 shots per second). |
| Volley Turret | Emerald Block | Arrows | Fires a rain of arrows into the air to strike from above. |
| Killer Turret | Diamond Block | Arrows | Massive damage per arrow; the ultimate defense. |
Turret Upgrades#
Turrets can be improved by right-clicking them with specific items. Only one upgrade can be active at a time, and the item is not consumed (it can be swapped out).
- Diamond: Increases projectile damage significantly.
- Iron Ingot: Adds Fire Aspect to projectiles, setting targets ablaze.
- Feather: Makes the turret 'light,' allowing it to be pushed around like an entity.
- Gunpowder: Adds an explosive effect to projectiles.
- Slimeball: Adds a Slowness effect to hit targets.
- Ender Pearl: Increases the turret's detection and firing range.
- Spider Eye: Adds a Poison effect to hit targets.
- Fire Charge: Converts Fireball Turrets into Ghast-style explosive turrets.
Block Golems#
Block Golems are utility blocks given life. They are created by placing a Skeleton Skull on top of a specific utility block. These golems follow the player and can be made to sit or stand by sneaking and right-clicking.
Available Block Golems
- Workbench Golem: A mobile crafting table.
- Furnace Golem: A mobile furnace that can smelt items on the go.
- Anvil Golem: A mobile anvil for repairs (has limited uses like a standard anvil).
- Chest Golem: A walking chest with a full inventory. Available in Normal, Trapped, and Ender Chest variants.
- Jukebox Golem: Plays music discs while following the player.
- Jack o'Lantern Golem: Acts as a mobile light source.
Note: Skeleton Skulls can be obtained as rare drops from Skeletons or crafted by surrounding a Wither Skeleton Skull with Glistering Melons.

Manuals and Targeting#
To manage your army, the mod provides several manuals that can be crafted and read (right-click a block while holding the book).
Crafting Recipes
| Item | Recipe | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Golem Manual | Book + Pumpkin | Lists all golem building recipes and stats. |
| Turret Manual | Book + Dispenser | Lists all turret building recipes and stats. |
| Upgrade Manual | Book + Ender Pearl | Explains all turret upgrade effects. |
| Block Golem Manual | Book + Skeleton Skull | Lists all block golem recipes. |
| Mob Target List | Book + Rotten Flesh | Right-click a mob to toggle its targeting status. |
| Player Permissions | Book + Bone | Manage which players your golems should ignore or allow access to. |
Targeting Mechanics
By default, golems and turrets attack all vanilla monsters and ignore all players. Using the Mob Target List, you can right-click any entity (including those from other mods) to add or remove them from the 'attack' list. The Player Permissions book allows you to whitelist friends so they aren't targeted by your defenses.
Mechanics and Configuration#
Dismantling
If you need to move a turret or golem without killing it, you can use Shears (Sneak + Right-click) to instantly dismantle them back into their component items.
Configuration
The mod's behavior can be heavily customized via the utilitymobs.cfg file in the Minecraft config folder. Key options include:
- Hostile Mode: Setting golems and turrets to be hostile toward the player for base-defense testing.
- Recipe Toggles: Disabling the building recipes for specific golems or turrets.
- Attack Unknown Players: A server-wide setting to determine if golems should automatically attack players not on their permission list.
