Overview#

Random Things is a massive utility mod designed to fill the gaps in vanilla Minecraft gameplay. It does not follow a single theme but instead provides a collection of disparate but highly functional items and blocks. Key features include the Spectre Dimension (a personal pocket space), the Blood Moon world event, advanced redstone components, and unique automation tools like the Player Interface and Item Collector. Whether you are looking for better ways to manage your inventory, automate crop growth, or explore new magical mechanics, Random Things provides the tools necessary for a more efficient survival experience.

World Events and Dimensions#

The Blood Moon

The Blood Moon is a random world event that has a 5% chance (configurable) of occurring every night. When a Blood Moon rises, the moon turns red, and the atmosphere becomes dark and ominous.

  • Mechanics: During a Blood Moon, the mob spawn rate is significantly increased, and mobs can spawn much closer to the player than usual.
  • Restrictions: Players are unable to sleep in a bed to skip the night during a Blood Moon.
  • Visuals: The sky and fog take on a deep red tint.

The Spectre Dimension

The Spectre Dimension is a personal, 16x16x16 cube dimension assigned to each player. It is a void world where players can build compact machines or storage systems.

  • Access: Players enter this dimension by using a Spectre Key. Right-clicking with the key will teleport the player to their private room. Using the key again inside the dimension returns the player to their original coordinates in the overworld.
  • Expansion: While the initial room is small, it can be decorated and utilized for high-density automation.

Entities and Mobs#

Random Things adds a small number of specialized entities that interact with the mod's unique materials.

Entity Spawn Conditions Behavior Drops
Spirit Spawns when a mob is killed (rare) or during a Blood Moon. Hostile, flying entity that attacks the player. Ectoplasm
Golden Chicken Created by feeding a Chicken a Golden Egg. Behaves like a normal chicken but lays Gold Nuggets. Gold Nuggets, Feathers

Spirit

Spirits are translucent, ghostly entities. They are the primary source of Ectoplasm, a critical crafting ingredient for Spectre-tier equipment. They are difficult to hit due to their flight and small size.

Golden Chicken

By obtaining a Golden Egg (found in dungeon chests or via specific loot mechanics), a player can transform a standard chicken. This chicken will periodically lay Gold Nuggets instead of standard eggs, providing a passive source of gold.

Key Blocks#

Automation and Utility

  • Player Interface: A powerful block that allows external pipes and hoppers to interact with a player's inventory. When a player's name is set in the interface, items pumped into the block go directly into the player's bags.
  • Item Collector: Automatically picks up items dropped on the ground within a specific radius. The Advanced Item Collector allows for precise filtering and range adjustment.
  • Block Breaker: A redstone-activated block that breaks the block directly in front of it and ejects the item to its rear.
  • Block Placer: The counterpart to the breaker; it places a block from its internal inventory when receiving a redstone pulse.
  • Online Detector: Emits a redstone signal if a specific player is currently logged into the server.

Environmental Blocks

  • Nature Core: Found naturally in the center of large, procedurally generated trees. It slowly transforms the surrounding area, growing plants, trees, and turning cobblestone into mossy variants.
  • Fertilized Dirt: A special soil that does not require water and significantly increases the growth speed of crops planted on it. It cannot be trampled into normal dirt.
  • Rain Shield: When provided with a redstone signal, this block prevents rain from falling in a large radius around it.

Redstone Components

  • Contact Button/Lever: These can be placed on any surface and act as invisible triggers or compact logic gates.
  • Igniter: When powered by redstone, it sets the block in front of it on fire. Useful for automated Nether Portals or trash incinerators.
  • Inventory Observer: Monitors a specific slot in an adjacent container and emits a redstone signal when the contents change.

Key Items and Gadgets#

Tools and Equipment

  • Spectre Key: The gateway to the Spectre Dimension. Crafted using Ectoplasm and Gold.
  • Summoning Pendulum: Allows the player to "capture" a mob and carry it in their inventory. Right-clicking a mob stores it; right-clicking the ground releases it. It can hold up to 5 mobs simultaneously.
  • Water Walking Boots: Allows the player to walk on the surface of water and lava (though lava still inflicts fire damage unless fire resistance is active).
  • Magnetic Force: A consumable or rechargeable item that teleports the player to another player on the server, provided the target player has a matching item or has granted permission.
  • Escape Rope: A reusable item that instantly teleports the player to the last place they saw sunlight (the surface), specifically for use in caves.

Materials

  • Ectoplasm: Dropped by Spirits. Used for Spectre Blocks, Spectre Strings, and the Spectre Key.
  • Bean Pods: Harvested from large Bean Stalks. Opening them yields various items, including Iron Nuggets, Gold Nuggets, or even Diamonds.
  • Lotus Seeds: Found in dungeon chests. When eaten, they grant a significant amount of experience points instantly.

Mechanics and Systems#

Floo Network

The Floo Network is a teleportation system based on Floo Signs.

  1. Place a sign and name it.
  2. Use Floo Powder on the sign to activate it.
  3. Right-clicking an active sign allows the player to select any other active Floo Sign on the network to teleport to.

Spectre Anchoring

By crafting a Spectre Anchor and combining it with an item in a crafting grid, the item becomes "Anchored." Anchored items will remain in the player's inventory upon death, rather than dropping on the ground.

Bean Stalks

By planting a Magic Bean (found in chests), a massive beanstalk will grow rapidly toward the sky limit. These stalks feature a unique climbing mechanic that is much faster than traditional ladders, making them ideal for vertical base navigation.

Crafting and Recipes#

Most Random Things recipes follow standard crafting table patterns, but several require specialized materials found through exploration.

Item Ingredients Pattern
Spectre Key Ectoplasm + Gold Ingot + Obsidian Vertical: Ectoplasm (Top), Gold (Middle), Obsidian (Bottom)
Fertilized Dirt Dirt + Bonemeal + Rotten Flesh Shapeless: 1x Dirt, 1x Bonemeal, 1x Rotten Flesh
Item Collector Hopper + Iron Ingot + Ender Pearl Hopper (Center), Iron (Sides), Ender Pearl (Top)
Spectre Anchor Ectoplasm + Iron Ingot Shapeless: 1x Ectoplasm, 1x Iron Ingot

Note: In 1.12.2, many recipes involve the use of the Anvil for combining Spectre Anchors with tools, whereas in 1.14.4, some of these interactions are moved to the Smithing Table.
