Thaumcraft Inventory Scanning (also known as Thaumic Inventory Scanning) is a quality-of-life addon designed for Thaumcraft 4 (Minecraft) and Thaumcraft 6 (Minecraft). In base Thaumcraft, players are required to drop items onto the ground as physical entities to scan them with a Thaumometer. This mod eliminates that tedious process by enabling direct interaction with item icons inside Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs).

By simply hovering over an item while holding a Thaumometer, the player can analyze its magical properties, discover new Aspects, and gain Research Points. This functionality extends to player inventories, chests, and various modded containers, making it an indispensable tool for any aspiring Thaumaturge.

The mod hooks into the standard Minecraft inventory system to allow the Thaumometer to 'see' items that are not currently rendered in the world.

Scanning Logic

When a player opens a GUI and hovers over a slot, the mod checks for the following conditions:

1. The player must have a Thaumometer in their hand or attached to their cursor.
2. The item in the slot must have defined Aspects (either from vanilla Thaumcraft or other addons).
3. The player must have discovered the prerequisite Aspects required to understand the item's composition.

If these conditions are met, the standard scanning animation and sound effect play, and the item is marked as 'Scanned' in the player's knowledge base.

The "Secret" Feature

A notable hidden feature of this mod is the ability to scan the player themselves. By hovering the Thaumometer over the player's character model in the inventory screen, the player can scan themselves to discover Aspects such as Humanus, Spiritus, or Corpus (depending on the Thaumcraft version and installed addons).

While this mod does not add new items or blocks of its own, it relies entirely on the Thaumometer from the base Thaumcraft mod.

Crafting the Thaumometer (Thaumcraft 6)

To use this mod, you must first craft a Thaumometer in an Arcane Workbench:

• Ingredients: 4x Gold Ingots, 1x Glass Pane.
• Vis Cost: 20 Aer/Aqua/Ignis/Terra/Ordo/Perditio (varies by version).

Using the mod is intuitive and integrates seamlessly with standard gameplay:

1. Equip the Thaumometer: Place the Thaumometer in your active hotbar slot or pick it up with your mouse cursor so it is 'held'.
2. Open an Inventory: Open your player inventory (E), a Chest, an Arcane Workbench, or any other supported container.
3. Hover to Scan: Move your mouse cursor over the item you wish to analyze.
4. Observe Results: If the item is scannable, you will see the purple 'scanning' particles and hear the chime. The Aspects contained within the item will appear in the chat or as a popup notification, and Research Points will be added to your total.

Note: In some versions, you may need to hold a specific key (usually Shift) while hovering if configured to do so, though the default behavior is automatic on hover.

The mod includes a configuration file (tcinventoryscan.cfg or inventoryscanning.cfg) that allows server administrators and players to customize the experience.

This mod is Optional on Clients. This means that if a server has the mod installed, players can still join without it, but they will not be able to use the inventory scanning feature. For the best experience, it is recommended that both the server and the client have the mod installed.

Thaumcraft Inventory Scanning is highly compatible with the broader Minecraft modding ecosystem:

• Thaumcraft 4 & 6: Fully supports the different research systems of both major versions.
• Storage Mods: Works with Iron Chests, Refined Storage, and standard chests.
• Technical Limitation: Extremely large inventories (such as a massive Applied Energistics 2 ME Terminal or a Drawer Controller with hundreds of connected drawers) may occasionally fail to scan due to the way Minecraft handles slot data packets. In these cases, it is recommended to move a stack of the item to a smaller container or your player inventory to scan it.
