Overview#
RFTools is a high-tech utility mod designed to expand the capabilities of Redstone Flux (RF) systems. While it provides standard machines like auto-crafters and quarries, its primary focus is on high-end infrastructure: modular screens for base monitoring, a robust teleportation network, and the ability to construct entirely custom dimensions.
In the 1.12.2 and 1.11.2 versions, the mod is highly modular and requires the McJtyLib dependency to function. It is often paired with RFTools Dimensions (which handles the world-creation aspect) and RFTools Control (for advanced automation). The mod is designed for mid-to-late game play, requiring significant amounts of power to maintain its most powerful features, such as the Shield System and Dimension Builder.
Core Mechanics and Power#
Most machines in RFTools require RF (Redstone Flux) or Tesla power to operate. The mod includes several blocks specifically for managing and distributing this energy.
Machine Frame
The Machine Frame is the fundamental crafting ingredient for almost every block in the mod. It comes in different tiers, though the basic version is crafted using Iron Ingots, Gold Nuggets, and Lapis Lazuli around a piece of glass.
Powercells
Powercells are modular energy storage blocks. They can be placed adjacent to each other to share their internal buffers, effectively acting as a single large battery.
- Linking: By using a Powercell Card, players can link two Powercells across any distance or even across dimensions. This allows for wireless power transfer, though a small percentage of power is lost during the transfer (configurable, typically 5-10%).
- Tiers: Powercells come in Basic, Advanced, and Superior tiers, each increasing the RF storage capacity and transfer rate.
Power Relay
The Power Relay allows players to control the flow of RF based on a redstone signal. It can be used to prevent machines from draining a power system or to prioritize certain sub-networks.
Teleportation System#
The RFTools teleportation system is one of the most reliable methods for long-distance travel. It consists of three primary components:
| Block | Function |
|---|---|
| Matter Transmitter | The starting point. It sends the player to a specific destination. Requires power to initiate the teleport. |
| Matter Receiver | The destination. It must be powered to receive players safely. If unpowered, the player may take damage or die upon arrival. |
| Dialing Device | The controller. It is used to 'dial' a Transmitter to a specific Receiver. One Dialing Device can manage all Transmitters/Receivers in a local area. |
Portable Teleportation
- Charged Porter: A handheld item that can be linked to a Matter Receiver. Right-clicking allows the player to teleport to that receiver from anywhere, consuming RF based on the distance.
- Advanced Charged Porter: Allows storing multiple destinations (up to 8) and switching between them using a hotkey.
Dimension Building#
The Dimension system allows players to create custom worlds using Dimlets. These worlds can be made of specific blocks (like Diamond Blocks), contain specific mobs, or have unique environmental effects.
Key Machines
- Dimension Enscriber: Used to create a 'Dimension Tab'. Players place Dimlets into the enscriber to define the world's properties.
- Dimension Builder: The most important block. It takes a 'Realized Dimension Tab' and consumes massive amounts of RF to create and maintain the dimension. If the Builder runs out of power while a player is in the dimension, the player will begin taking rapid damage.
- Dimension Researcher: Used to extract Dimlets from 'Unknown Dimlets' found in loot chests.
- Dimension Editor: Allows players to 'inject' new Dimlets into an already created dimension (e.g., adding a time lock or a new mob).
Dimlet Types
- Terrain: Determines the shape of the world (Flat, Void, Islands, Waves).
- Material: Determines what the terrain is made of (e.g., Stone, Water, Gold Blocks).
- Liquid: Determines the oceans and lakes (e.g., Lava, Oil).
- Mob: Determines which mobs spawn naturally.
- Sky: Controls the color of the sky, fog, and the appearance of the sun/moon.
- Time: Can freeze the time of day (e.g., Eternal Noon).
Phased Field Generator (PFG)
This is a handheld device that protects the player from the 'power failure' effect in a dimension. As long as the PFG has RF, the player will not take damage even if the Dimension Builder is unpowered.

The Builder and Shape Cards#
The Builder is a versatile machine capable of moving, placing, or breaking blocks in a defined area. Its behavior is determined by the Shape Card inserted into it.
Shape Card Varieties
- Basic Shape Cards: Used to place blocks in shapes like Boxes, Spheres, or Cylinders. Useful for massive construction projects.
- Quarry Cards: These cards turn the Builder into a high-speed quarry. It will mine all blocks in the area and output them to a chest on top of the Builder.
- Clearing Quarry: Removes blocks and leaves a hole.
- Silk Quarry: Mines blocks with the Silk Touch effect.
- Fortune Quarry: Mines blocks with the Fortune III effect.
- Pump Card: Used to pump out liquids from a large area.
- Space Chamber: By using Space Chamber Blocks and a Space Chamber Card, the Builder can copy or move entire structures (including tile entities) from one location to another.
Storage and Logistics#
RFTools offers unique ways to manage items without traditional pipes.
Modular Storage
A single block that can hold up to 300 stacks of items (with a Tier 3 Storage Module). It features a built-in search bar and sorting options.
Storage Scanner
The Storage Scanner is a powerful utility that 'scans' all chests, crates, and modular storage blocks in a radius (up to 20 blocks). It provides a unified interface where players can see every item in their base, search for them, and even craft using items from those various containers. It can also be used to automate item routing.
Remote Storage
By using a Remote Storage Module, players can access their Modular Storage blocks from anywhere in the world (or even other dimensions) using a Storage Tablet.
Shield System#
The Shield Projector (Tiers 1-4) creates a customizable barrier of 'Shield Blocks'. These shields can be configured to:
- Appearance: Solid, Translucent, Invisible, or mimicking any other block.
- Filters: Allow players to pass through while blocking mobs, or vice versa.
- Damage: Deal damage to entities that touch the shield (requires extra RF).
- Shape: Shields are defined by placing 'Shield Template' blocks or by using a Shape Card to define the area.
Environmental Controller#
The Environmental Controller provides area-of-effect buffs to players within its radius. It requires RF to operate, and the cost increases based on the radius and the type of buff.
Available Modules:
- Flight: Provides creative-style flight.
- Haste: Increases mining speed.
- Regeneration: Heals players over time.
- Saturation: Prevents hunger.
- Peace: Prevents hostile mobs from spawning within the radius.
- Water Breathing: Allows breathing underwater.
Mob Spawner#
The RFTools Spawner is a high-tech alternative to vanilla spawners. It does not use spawn eggs; instead, it uses Syringes.
- Syringe: The player must hit a mob with a syringe until it is 100% full of that mob's essence.
- Matter Beamers: The Spawner requires three types of 'matter' to create a mob. These are sent to the Spawner via Matter Beamers. Each mob requires different materials (e.g., a Wither Skeleton might require Bones, Nether Wart, and Coal).
- Spawning: Once the Spawner has the Syringe, RF, and the required materials from the Beamers, it will materialize the mob.
Modular Screens#
Screens are 1x1 to 3x3 blocks that display information. They require a Screen Controller nearby to function.
Common Modules:
- Energy Module: Displays the RF stored in a machine.
- Fluid Module: Displays the amount of liquid in a tank.
- Inventory Module: Shows how many of a specific item are in a chest.
- Button Module: Allows the screen to act as a redstone button.
- Clock Module: Displays the in-game time.
- Text Module: Displays custom text or labels.
Logic and Redstone Blocks#
RFTools includes a suite of compact logic blocks that replace complex vanilla redstone circuits:
- Sequencer: A 64-tick programmable grid that outputs a redstone pattern.
- Timer: Outputs a pulse every X ticks.
- Counter: Outputs a pulse after receiving a specific number of input pulses.
- Sensor: Detects blocks, entities, or fluids in front of it and outputs a signal.
- Logic Block: Performs AND, OR, XOR, and NAND operations on up to three inputs.
- Analog to Digital Converter: Converts a variable redstone signal strength into specific outputs.
Tools and Items#
Smart Wrench
The primary tool for RFTools. It has two modes: Normal (for rotating blocks) and Select (for selecting areas for the Shield Projector or Builder). It can also be used to dismantle machines instantly by shift-right-clicking.
Inventory Checker
A block that emits a redstone signal if a specific slot in an adjacent inventory contains a certain number of items.
Redstone Transmitter/Receiver
Allows for wireless redstone signals. A Transmitter can be set to a specific channel, and any number of Receivers tuned to that channel will output the signal.
