MAtmos is a modification for Minecraft that dramatically enhances the game's audio experience by introducing a dynamic and immersive sound atmosphere. Instead of the game's usual silence, MAtmos generates a rich soundscape of natural noises that react to the player's environment and activities. This includes ambient sounds like birds chirping in a forest, water dripping in a deep cave, wind gusts on a mountain, and the distant rumble of stone.

The mod constantly analyzes the player's surroundings, detecting whether they are outdoors, indoors, or deep within a cave, and adapts the audio experience in real-time to provide fitting sound effects.

MAtmos operates using specialized resource packs known as soundpacks, which contain the audio files and logic for generating soundscapes. The mod itself does not include sounds by default, requiring users to install and enable soundpacks to experience its features.

MAtmos's core mechanic revolves around its ability to dynamically generate ambient sounds based on the player's environment. The mod actively scans the player's location and surrounding blocks to determine the appropriate soundscape.

Key environmental detections include:

• Biome: Sounds adapt to the current biome, such as forests, deserts, or swamps.
• Indoor/Outdoor Status: The mod differentiates between being outdoors, inside a structure, or deep within a cave, playing distinct audio cues for each.
• Proximity to Features: Sounds are triggered based on proximity to elements like water, cliffs, or dense foliage.

The mod also incorporates interaction sounds, enhancing actions like drinking potions or handling items.

Configuration

Players can customize their audio experience through an in-game settings menu. This menu is typically accessed by pressing the F4 key, though some versions may use F7.

Within the settings menu, users can:

• Adjust the volume levels of individual sound groups, referred to as 'Expansions'. For example, the volume of weapon interaction sounds (interactions_weapons.xml) can be tuned down or muted entirely.
• Combine different expansions from various soundpacks, allowing for a highly personalized audio environment.
• Quickly change the global volume by holding down F7 and looking up or down (in versions where F7 is the menu key).
• Disable MAtmos entirely in-game or set it to start disabled.

Soundpacks are essential for MAtmos, as the mod itself does not contain any audio files. These specialized resource packs provide the sounds and the rules for when and how they are played. Users must place desired soundpacks into their Minecraft resource packs folder and enable them in-game.

Several notable soundpacks have been developed for MAtmos:

• MAtmos 2020 "Zen": This flagship soundpack features high-quality, seamless audio loops with variations tailored for indoor and outdoor environments. It aims to provide an enhanced atmosphere without feeling out of place.
• Default Soundpack (+introduction): The original soundpack from 2012, this pack has been updated to function with later versions of MAtmos.
• Rhapsodia: This soundpack focuses on improving the realism of various sounds, such as rain, thunder, and potion consumption.

MAtmos is designed to integrate with Minecraft's environment to provide its atmospheric sounds. While generally compatible, certain technical aspects and interactions with other modifications may require specific attention.

Mod Loaders

Historically, MAtmos has been associated with various mod loaders. Later iterations of the mod have been built for Forge.

Mixin Conflicts

MAtmos utilizes Mixin for some of its game modifications. Standard versions of the mod's JAR files embed a specific version of Mixin. For instance, versions for a particular Minecraft release embed Mixin 0.7.11, while those for a later release embed Mixin 0.8.3.

These embedded Mixin versions can sometimes lead to conflicts with other mods that either provide or require a different Mixin version. If Mixin errors occur during game launch, several troubleshooting steps can be taken:

• Use +nomixin versions: Some distributions of MAtmos offer versions ending in +nomixin. These versions do not embed Mixin and require another mod to provide the necessary library.
• Add a Mixin bootstrap mod: Installing a dedicated Mixin bootstrap mod can resolve conflicts. Examples include MixinBooter for a later Minecraft release or UniMixins for an earlier release.
• Address ASM transformer conflicts: Certain mods use ASM transformers that may break when Mixin is present. Mixingasm can be used to fix these issues. UniMixins includes Mixingasm for an earlier Minecraft release, and a separate Mixingasm module can be added alongside MixinBooter for a later release.

Suggested Companion Mods

To further enhance the audio experience, MAtmos can be used alongside other sound-related mods:

• Dynamic Surroundings: This mod can provide improved footstep sounds. To avoid redundant biome sounds, it is recommended to disable Dynamic Surroundings' biome sound features in its configuration.
• Sound Filters / Sound Physics: These mods introduce effects like reverb and sound muffling when sounds originate from behind walls, adding another layer of realism.
