Overview#

OpenModularTurrets (OMT) provides a highly customizable solution for base protection. Unlike static defense mods, OMT allows players to build turret systems piece-by-piece, starting from low-tier disposable units to high-tech railguns and particle beams. The mod operates on a tiered progression system where higher-level turret bases support more powerful weapons, increased energy storage, and more expansion slots. All powered turrets require Redstone Flux (RF) or Forge Energy (FE) to operate, which can be provided via external cables or internal power-generating addons.

Core Mechanics#

The Turret Assembler

In version 1.12.2, most components and turrets are crafted using the Turret Assembler. This specialized machine requires power and specific blueprints/materials to construct the modular parts of your defense system.

Turret Bases

Every turret must be placed on a Turret Base of a corresponding or higher tier. The base acts as the "brain" and power reservoir for the turret head.

  • Placement: Place the base first, then right-click the top of the base with a Turret Head item.
  • GUI: Right-click a placed base with an empty hand to open the configuration menu. Here you can manage ammo, upgrades, addons, and targeting filters.
  • Camo System: You can disguise any turret base to look like a standard block. Right-click the base with the desired block in hand. To remove the camouflage, Shift-Right-click with an empty hand.

Targeting and Security

Turrets can be configured to target specific entities:

  • Hostile Mobs: Targets standard monsters (Zombies, Skeletons, etc.).
  • Neutral Mobs: Targets passive animals (Cows, Sheep).
  • Players: Targets all players not on the 'Trusted' list.
  • Trusted Players: A dedicated GUI tab allows owners to add player names to a whitelist, preventing the turret from firing upon them.

Turret Bases#

Turret bases provide the energy buffer and slots for upgrades. Higher tiers are more durable and have better power throughput.

Tier Health RF Storage Max IO Upgrade Slots Addon Slots
1 20 500 RF 100 RF/t 1 2
2 40 150,000 RF 500 RF/t 1 2
3 60 500,000 RF 1,500 RF/t 1 2
4 80 2,000,000 RF 5,000 RF/t 1 2
5 100 10,000,000 RF 10,000 RF/t 2 2

Turrets#

Turrets are divided into tiers. A turret head cannot be placed on a base of a lower tier (e.g., a Tier 3 Rocket Launcher requires a Tier 3, 4, or 5 Base).

Disposable & Tier 1

  • Disposable Item Turret: The entry-level defense. It has low accuracy and range but requires no power. It uses cobblestone or other junk items as ammo.
  • Potato Cannon: A fun, low-damage turret that uses potatoes as ammunition.
  • Machine Gun Turret: A rapid-fire Tier 1 turret. Uses Bullets and requires 100 RF per shot. Range: 18 blocks.

Tier 2 & Tier 3

  • Incendiary Turret: Fires Blazing Clay that sets targets on fire and deals area-of-effect (AOE) damage. Range: 12 blocks.
  • Grenade Launcher: Launches grenades that explode on impact. High AOE damage. Range: 20 blocks.
  • Relativistic Turret: A utility turret that applies heavy debuffs (Slowness and Weakness) to targets rather than direct damage.

Tier 4 & Tier 5

  • Rocket Launcher: Fires homing missiles at targets. Extremely high damage and range (30 blocks).
  • Teleporter Turret: Teleports targets away from the base. Useful for non-lethal crowd control.
  • Laser Turret: High-frequency energy beam. Requires no physical ammo, only RF. Range: 25 blocks.
  • Railgun: The ultimate sniper. Deals massive damage with a very long range (50+ blocks) but has a slow fire rate. Requires 25,000 RF per shot.

Ammunition#

Most physical turrets require specific ammo types crafted in the Turret Assembler or a standard crafting table.

Ammo Type Used By Crafting Ingredients (Typical)
Bullets Machine Gun Iron Ingot, Gunpowder, Redstone
Blazing Clay Incendiary Turret Clay Ball, Blaze Powder, Redstone
Grenades Grenade Launcher Iron Ingot, Gunpowder, Redstone
Rockets Rocket Launcher Iron Ingot, Gunpowder
Energy Laser, Railgun RF/FE Power from Base
Junk Disposable Turret Cobblestone, Dirt, etc.

Upgrades and Addons#

Upgrades and Addons are placed into the Turret Base GUI to enhance performance.

Upgrades

  • Range Upgrade: Increases the maximum distance the turret can detect and fire at targets.
  • Fire Rate Upgrade: Decreases the cooldown between shots.
  • Accuracy Upgrade: Reduces the spread of projectiles.
  • Efficiency Upgrade: Reduces the RF/FE cost per shot.
  • Damage Upgrade: Increases the base damage dealt by the turret's projectiles.

Addons

  • Solar Panel Addon: Generates a small amount of RF during the day to keep the turret powered.
  • Redstone Reactor: Converts Redstone Dust placed in the ammo slots into RF power.
  • Turret Concealer: Makes the turret head invisible and retracts it into the base when no targets are nearby.
  • Recycler Addon: Provides a percentage chance to not consume ammunition when firing.
  • Potentiometer: Allows the turret base to emit a Redstone signal based on the number of targets in range.

Defensive Blocks#

The mod also includes passive defense blocks to slow down or damage intruders.

  • Hard Walls (Tiers 1-5): Extremely durable blocks with high blast resistance. Higher tiers are nearly indestructible to standard explosives.
  • Fences (Tiers 1-5): Thin defensive barriers. Tier 2 and higher fences are electrified, dealing damage to any mob or player that touches them.
