Overview#

Project Zulu: A Better Overworld is a massive content mod created by Crudedragos that aims to make exploration and survival more engaging. It populates every biome with unique flora and fauna, ranging from passive finches and giraffes to hostile minotaurs and mummies. Beyond entities, the mod introduces a completely revamped potion brewing system, functional blocks like campfires and spikes, and rare structures such as desert pyramids and underground labyrinths.

Every feature in Project Zulu is highly configurable, allowing players to enable or disable specific mobs, blocks, or mechanics to suit their gameplay style.

Creatures and Mobs#

Project Zulu adds over 30 new entities to the game. These are categorized into Neutral/Passive animals and Hostile monsters.

Neutral & Passive Creatures

These animals populate various biomes and generally only attack if provoked.

Items and Materials#

Project Zulu introduces several new materials used for crafting advanced gear and survival tools.

  • Fur Pelt: Dropped by bears, boars, and mammoths. Used to craft Fur Armor.
  • Scale: Dropped by alligators and armadillos. Used for Scale Armor.
  • Tusk: Dropped by rhinos and elephants. Used to craft Ivory Spikes.
  • Shiny Bauble: A rare drop or crafted item (Glowstone + Netherstalk). Used to upgrade potions.
  • Ankh: A rare Egyptian artifact found in Pyramids, used for high-tier crafting.
  • Scrap Meat: A basic food source dropped by most Project Zulu animals.
  • Hearts (Small/Large): Rare drops that can be used to increase or restore health.
  • Raw Fiber: Obtained from plants; used to create Cloth Armor.

Blocks and Plants#

Functional Blocks

  • Tombstone: Automatically spawns where a player dies, storing their inventory and XP. Right-click with an empty hand to retrieve items.
    • Recipe: 8 Cobblestone surrounding 1 Sign.
  • Campfire (Wood/Stone): Provides light and can cook food. Ignite with Coal/Torch; extinguish with Water.
    • Recipe: 3 Logs/Cobblestone (bottom) + 1 Coal (center).
  • Ivory Spikes: Defensive blocks that damage entities walking over them.
    • Plain: Crafted from Tusks.
    • Sticky: Right-click a spike with a Slimeball to add a Slowness effect.
    • Poison: Right-click a spike with a Poison Droplet to add a Poison effect.
  • QuickSand: A natural trap block found in jungles and swamps that causes entities to sink.

Flora

  • Aloe Vera: Found in deserts. Provides Water Droplets (food) and can produce Tumbleweeds.
  • Creeper Blossom: A rare plant that explodes like a Creeper when stepped on.
  • Night Bloom: A flower that remains closed during the day and opens at night, emitting light.
  • Palm Tree: Grows near water in deserts (Oasis). Drops Coconuts.
  • Coconut: Can be broken into Milk (drinkable), Shells (fuel), and Seeds.
  • Tumbleweed: Rolls across deserts; can be harvested for String.

Armor Sets#

Project Zulu adds several specialized armor sets with unique properties.

Structures#

Exploring the world will reveal several new generated structures, often containing unique loot and dangers.

  • Pyramid: Large sandstone structures in the desert. They contain a maze of tunnels, Mummy spawners, and a central chamber with Jasper Blocks used to summon the Pharaoh boss.
  • Labyrinth: Massive underground mazes filled with Minotaurs, Haunted Armor, and Mimics. They offer high-tier loot but are extremely difficult to navigate.
  • Cemetery: Found in various biomes, these plots are guarded by Haunted Armor and contain many tombstones and small crypts with chests.
  • Oasis: Small, lush areas in the desert featuring water and Palm Trees.
  • Cathedral: A rare, large building (disabled by default in world gen) intended for creative use or server hubs.

Mechanics and Brewing#

Custom Brewing System

Project Zulu overhauls brewing by introducing two new stands. Vanilla potions cannot be brewed in these stands, and Project Zulu potions cannot be brewed in vanilla stands.

  1. Traditional Brewing Stand: Has a single slot for brewing. (Recipe: 3 Glass, 1 Cobblestone, 5 Logs).
  2. Nether Brewing Stand: Has three slots, similar to vanilla. (Recipe: 3 Glass, 2 Glowstone, 4 Netherbrick).

Key Ingredients:

  • Bubbling Potion: Replaces the Awkward Potion as the base for all recipes. Created by adding a Shiny Bauble to a Water Bottle.
  • Shiny Bauble: Used to increase the 'Tier' of a potion, improving both duration and power.
  • Bark: Used to brew Resistance potions.

Custom Commands

  • /cu callItemClear: Clears dropped items from the world (if enabled in config).
  • /cu entities list: Displays a list of all active entities in the world.
  • /cu unstuck <player>: Teleports a player to the world spawn point.
