Rebind Narrator Wiki

How Rebind Narrator adds a rebindable Toggle Narrator key so you can move the narrator shortcut off Ctrl+B to any key.

Overview#

In vanilla Minecraft the screen-reading narrator can only be toggled with the hard-coded Ctrl+B shortcut, and there is no way to change or remove it. That makes it easy to switch the narrator on by accident and awkward to turn back off.

Rebind Narrator fixes this by adding a proper Toggle Narrator key binding to the Controls screen. Everything is handled on the client, so the mod works on any world or server without a server-side install.

The Toggle Narrator Key Binding#

After installing the mod, open Options -> Controls -> Key Binds and scroll to the Miscellaneous section. A new entry appears:

Binding Default
Narrator Ctrl + B

The binding starts on Ctrl+B so the mod behaves exactly like vanilla until you decide to change it.

Rebinding the Narrator Key#

To move the narrator toggle to a different key:

  1. Open Options -> Controls -> Key Binds.
  2. Find Narrator under Miscellaneous.
  3. Click its button, then press the key (or key + modifier) you want.
  4. Click Done.

From then on, the narrator only toggles on the key you chose. You can bind it to a single key with no modifier, or keep a modifier such as Ctrl if you prefer. Use Reset on that row to return it to the default Ctrl+B at any time.

Avoiding Accidental Toggles#

The most common reason to install Rebind Narrator is to stop toggling the narrator by mistake. Two easy setups:

  • Move it out of the way - bind the narrator to a rarely used key so Ctrl+B no longer does anything.
  • Pick a deliberate combo - keep a modifier so the narrator only toggles when you really mean it.

Because the binding uses Minecraft's normal Controls system, it also shows a warning if the key you pick already belongs to another action, so you can avoid conflicts.

Notes#

  • The mod is client-side only; it never needs to be installed on a server.
  • It only changes how the narrator is toggled - it does not change what the narrator reads or its volume.
  • The narrator itself still has its normal modes (off, reads all, reads chat, reads system), cycled by the key you bind.
  • Nothing is added to the world, so it is safe to add to or remove from existing saves.
