Overview#

IC2 Classic (IC2C) is a complete reimagining and modernization of the legendary IndustrialCraft 2 mod from the 1.4.7 era. While it maintains the 'Classic' feel and logic established by Alblaka, it has been extensively expanded by Speiger to include modern features, better performance, and integrated addons.

The mod centers around Energy Units (EU), a power system used to run a vast array of machinery. Unlike many modern mods that use a 'one-size-fits-all' power system, IC2 Classic utilizes voltage tiers and cable loss, requiring players to carefully plan their factory layouts. It is designed to be an 'assistance mod'—providing powerful tools to help your journey without forcing you to abandon vanilla mechanics unless you choose to dive deep into its automation capabilities.

Core Mechanics: The EU System#

The Energy Unit (EU) is the lifeblood of IC2 Classic. Understanding how it flows is critical to preventing your machines from exploding.

Voltage Tiers

Every machine has a maximum input voltage. Exceeding this will cause the machine to explode.

Tier Name Max Voltage (EU/p) Typical Source
1 Low Voltage (LV) 32 EU Basic Generators, BatBox
2 Medium Voltage (MV) 128 EU CESU, MFE, Wind Mills
3 High Voltage (HV) 512 EU MFSU, Nuclear Reactors
4 Extreme Voltage (EV) 2048 EU High-tier Transformers
5 Insane Voltage (IV) 8192 EU End-game Power Storage

Cable Loss and Insulation

Energy is lost as it travels through cables. Better materials and insulation reduce this loss.

  • Tin Cable: Best for LV. Very low loss over short distances.
  • Copper Cable: Standard for LV/MV. Moderate loss.
  • Gold Cable: Required for MV/HV. High loss unless insulated.
  • HV Cable (Iron): Used for HV/EV. Massive loss over distance.
  • Glass Fibre Cable: The gold standard. Extremely low loss and handles up to 512 EU/p (or more in specific configurations).

Resources and Ores#

IC2 Classic introduces several new materials that are essential for crafting circuits, machines, and tools.

Natural Resources

  • Copper Ore: Found at middle elevations. Used for basic wiring and small power storage.
  • Tin Ore: Found at middle elevations. Used for tin cans, batteries, and bronze alloy.
  • Uranium Ore: Rare, found deep underground. The primary fuel for Nuclear Reactors.
  • Lead Ore: Used for radiation shielding and advanced batteries.
  • Rubber Trees: These trees feature distinctive orange 'sticky resin' spots. Use a Treetap on these spots to collect resin, which is smelted or extracted into Rubber for insulating cables.

Alloys and Processed Materials

  • Bronze: Created by mixing 3 Copper Dust and 1 Tin Dust. It is as strong as Iron but more durable.
  • Refined Iron (Steel): Created by smelting Iron Ingots a second time (in 1.12.2) or via the Blast Furnace. Essential for machine casings.
  • Carbon Plate: Made from Raw Carbon Mesh compressed in a Compressor. Used for high-end armor and machines.

Power Generation#

To run your factory, you must generate EU. There are several methods ranging from simple to highly complex.

Basic Generators

  • Generator: Burns solid fuel (Coal, Wood) to produce 10 EU/t.
  • Geothermal Generator: Consumes Lava buckets or cells to produce 20 EU/t.
  • Solar Panel: Produces 1 EU/t during the day. IC2 Classic includes 'Compact Solars' (LV, MV, HV Solar Arrays) to save space.
  • Wind Mill: Produces EU based on height and surrounding air space. Be careful: high winds can break them if not reinforced.
  • Water Mill: Produces small amounts of EU when surrounded by water or fed water buckets.

Advanced Generation

  • Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG): Uses Pellets of RTG Fuel to provide constant, low-output power forever without consuming the fuel.
  • Nuclear Reactor: The ultimate power source. It uses Uranium fuel rods and requires complex cooling systems (Heat Vents, Coolant Cells) to prevent a catastrophic meltdown.

Processing Machinery#

Automation begins with processing raw materials into more efficient forms.

The Core Trio

  1. Macerator: Grinds ores into 2 Dusts, effectively doubling your ore yield. It can also grind gravel into flint or bone into bone meal.
  2. Electric Furnace: A faster, EU-powered version of the vanilla furnace.
  3. Extractor: Processes Sticky Resin into 3 Rubber (compared to 1 in a furnace). Also used to create Coils and Fuel.

Advanced Processing

  • Compressor: Turns loose materials into dense plates. Essential for creating Carbon Plates and Advanced Alloy.
  • Recycler: Consumes any item to produce 'Scrap'. Scrap can be used to create Scrap Boxes or as a catalyst in a Mass Fabricator.
  • Mass Fabricator: Consumes massive amounts of EU to produce UU-Matter, a liquid or solid that can be crafted into almost any resource in the game.
  • Induction Furnace: An advanced furnace that processes two stacks at once and becomes faster as it stays hot.
Machine Function EU Usage (Base)
Macerator Ore Doubling 2 EU/t
Compressor Plate Making 2 EU/t
Extractor Rubber/Cell Processing 2 EU/t
Canning Machine Food/Fuel Packaging 1 EU/t

Tools and Equipment#

IC2 Classic replaces the need for disposable tools with rechargeable electric versions.

Electric Tools

  • Mining Drill: Equivalent to an Iron Pickaxe/Shovel. Can be upgraded to a Diamond Drill.
  • Chainsaw: A powerful axe and shears combo. Highly effective against leaves and wood.
  • Electric Treetap: Quickly harvests resin without the manual clicking.
  • Nano Saber: A high-tech sword that deals massive damage when turned on, consuming EU per hit.

Armor Sets

  • Hazmat Suit: Protects the player from radiation (essential for handling Uranium) and fire damage.
  • Nano Suit: High-tier armor that provides significant damage reduction using EU.
  • Quantum Suit: The pinnacle of technology. It makes the player nearly invincible, allows for super-speed, massive jumps, and underwater breathing. It requires a Mass Fabricator to produce the necessary materials.

Agriculture and Crops#

IC2 Classic features a deep farming system that allows players to breed custom plants.

  • Crop Sticks: Placing these on tilled soil allows you to plant IC2 crops. Placing two sets of sticks next to each other allows for cross-breeding.
  • Stats: Crops have Growth, Gain, and Resistance stats. High stats make plants grow faster and drop more, but can also cause them to turn into 'Weeds' if not managed.
  • Unique Plants: You can grow Coffee, Hops (for brewing), Ferru (Iron-producing plants), and even Redstone or Gold plants through careful breeding.
  • Crop Nalyser: A handheld device used to identify the stats and species of seeds.

Nuclear Engineering#

The Nuclear Reactor is a 3x3x3 multiblock (expandable with Reactor Chambers).

Reactor Components

  • Uranium Fuel Rods: Single, Dual, or Quadruple. More rods produce exponentially more heat and power.
  • Heat Vents: Dissipate heat from the reactor into the environment or internal storage.
  • Heat Exchangers: Move heat between adjacent components or the reactor hull.
  • Coolant Cells: Absorb heat to prevent the reactor from melting down.

Safety Warning: If the reactor hull reaches 100% heat, it will explode with a force greater than several dozen TNT blocks, leaving a crater and permanent radiation in the area. Always use a Thermal Monitor or Redstone failsafe.

1.19.2 Specific Changes#

In the 1.19.2 version of IC2 Classic, several quality-of-life changes were introduced:

  • In-Game Wiki: A physical book item is available that contains real-time updated information on all blocks and items.
  • DataPack Support: Recipes and machine behaviors can now be modified via standard Minecraft DataPacks.
  • ResourcePacks: The texture system was overhauled to allow for easier customization of machine overlays and cable states.
  • Integration: Improved compatibility with modern mods and the removal of legacy 'Experimental' code paths that caused crashes in older versions.

Configuration and Customization#

IC2 Classic is highly configurable. Players can adjust:

  • EU Generation Rates: Increase or decrease the power output of any generator.
  • Explosion Power: Disable machine or reactor explosions if you prefer a safer experience.
  • Ore Generation: Toggle which ores spawn to avoid duplicates with other mods.
  • Balance Tiers: Adjust the cost of high-end items like the Quantum Suit or Mass Fabricator.
