Overview#

Rustic is a content-heavy mod designed to enhance the medieval aesthetic and functional depth of Minecraft. It focuses on providing players with tools for decoration, agriculture, and specialized crafting. Key features include a unique brewing system for alcoholic beverages with various buffs, an alchemy system for powerful elixirs, and a variety of rustic-style building materials like slate, clay walls, and ornate furniture.

Getting Started: The Almanac#

The Almanac is the essential in-game documentation for the Rustic mod. It contains detailed information on every block, item, and mechanic added by the mod.

To craft the Almanac, combine a Book and an Ironberry in any crafting grid. Ironberries can be obtained by breaking the leaves of Ironwood trees, which are found naturally in the world.

Item Ingredients Recipe
Almanac Book + Ironberry Shapeless

Farming and Flora#

Rustic introduces several new crops, trees, and herbs that are used in food, brewing, and alchemy.

Crops and Stakes

Many of Rustic's crops require Crop Stakes to grow. To use them, place a stake on tilled soil and plant the seed against the stake.

  • Tomatoes: Grow vertically up to three blocks high on stakes. Seeds are found by breaking tall grass.
  • Chili Peppers: Grow similarly to tomatoes. Seeds are found by breaking tall grass.
  • Grapes: Require Ropes to grow. Grape seeds (found in grass) grow into a vine that spreads horizontally along ropes placed above them.
  • Wildberries: Found in bushes in colder biomes. They can be eaten or used in brewing.
  • Ironberries: Dropped from Ironwood tree leaves. They are bitter but useful for alchemy and crafting the Almanac.

Trees

  • Olive Trees: Found in plains and forest biomes. Olives can be harvested from the leaves and used to produce Olive Oil.
  • Ironwood Trees: Found in various forests. Their wood is dark and sturdy, and their leaves drop Ironberries.

Herbs

Herbs spawn naturally in specific biomes and are the primary ingredients for Alchemy.

Herb Common Biomes Primary Use
Aloe Vera Deserts Healing Elixirs
Blood Orchid Jungles Health Boost
Chamomile Plains Regeneration
Cloudsbluff Extreme Hills Levitation
Cohosh Forests Instant Health
Coreroot Caves Night Vision
Ginseng Forests Haste
Horsetail Swamps Strength
Marshmallow Swamps Speed
Mooncap Mushroom Caves Invisibility
Wind Thistle Plains Speed

Bees and Apiaries

Beehives can be found hanging from trees. Breaking them yields Bees and Honeycombs.

  • Apiary: A block used to house bees. When bees are inside, they produce Honeycombs and Beeswax over time. They also speed up the growth of nearby crops.
  • Fertile Soil: Crafted using Bone Meal, Dirt, and Sand. It does not require water to stay hydrated and speeds up crop growth.

Specialized Crafting#

Rustic adds two primary manual crafting stations for processing raw materials.

Crushing Tub

The Crushing Tub is used to extract liquids from items. To use it, place items inside and jump on top of them repeatedly.

  • Grapes -> Grape Juice
  • Olives -> Olive Oil
  • Ironberries -> Ironberry Juice
  • Apples -> Apple Juice
  • Sugar Cane -> Sugar and Water

Evaporating Basin

The Evaporating Basin is used to dry out liquids over time, leaving behind solid items.

  • Water -> Salt
  • Ironberry Juice -> Tiny Pile of Iron Dust
  • Apple Juice -> Sugar

Brewing and Alcohol#

Brewing in Rustic involves fermenting juices into alcoholic beverages, which provide unique, long-lasting buffs.

Fermenting Barrel

Juices produced in the Crushing Tub are placed into a Fermenting Barrel. Over time, the juice will ferment into booze. Adding items like Glass Bottles or Buckets to the output slot will collect the finished product.

Beverages and Effects

Alcoholic drinks have a "Quality" value. Higher quality results in longer-lasting buffs and less severe "Drunk" side effects.

Drink Ingredient Effect
Ale Wort (Wheat) Fullness (prevents hunger depletion)
Cider Apple Juice Magic Resistance
Iron Wine Ironberry Juice Resistance
Mead Honey Absorption
Wildberry Wine Wildberry Juice Increases the level of existing potion effects
Wine Grape Juice Increases the duration of existing potion effects

Note: Consuming too much alcohol will apply the "Drunk" effect, causing nausea, slowness, and eventually mining fatigue.

Alchemy#

Alchemy allows for the creation of Elixirs, which are more potent or specialized versions of vanilla potions.

The Condenser and Retort

To perform alchemy, you need a Condenser and at least one Retort (up to two). The Retorts must be placed adjacent to the Condenser.

  1. Place a heat source (like Fire, Lava, or a Lit Furnace) beneath the Condenser.
  2. Fill the Condenser with Water.
  3. Place ingredients in the Retorts and the Condenser.
  4. Provide fuel (like Coal) to the Condenser's fuel slot.

Elixir Recipes

Elixirs are bottled in Glass Vials.

  • Elixir of Healing: Aloe Vera + Ginseng
  • Elixir of Regeneration: Chamomile + Marshmallow
  • Elixir of Iron Skin: Ironberries + Cohosh
  • Elixir of Feather Falling: Cloudsbluff + Wildberries

Blocks and Decoration#

Rustic provides a massive variety of aesthetic blocks for medieval builds.

Building Materials

  • Slate: A dark grey stone found in large underground deposits. It can be crafted into Slate Chiseled, Slate Tile, Slate Pillars, and Slate Bricks.
  • Clay Walls: Crafted with clay and sticks, these come in various patterns (Cross, Diagonal, Vertical) reminiscent of Tudor-style architecture.
  • Stone Pillars: Available in Granite, Diorite, Andesite, and Slate variants.
  • Painted Wood: Wood planks can be painted in all 16 colors using dyes.

Furniture and Lighting

  • Tables and Chairs: Available in all wood types. Chairs can be sat upon.
  • Lattice: Decorative iron or wood grids.
  • Lanterns: Medieval-style light sources that can be placed on floors or hung from ceilings.
  • Candles: Crafted from Beeswax and String. They can be placed in groups of up to four on a single block.
  • Chandelier Rings: Large iron rings used to hold multiple candles or lanterns.
  • Gargoyles: Stone statues that can be placed on the edges of buildings for a gothic look.

Storage

  • Cabinets: Wall-mounted storage that functions like a chest but takes up less floor space.
  • Barrels: Used for bulk item storage. They can be stacked.
  • Liquid Barrels: Used to store up to 16 buckets of any liquid.
  • Pots: Decorative ceramic containers that can store a small number of items.

Mechanics and HUD#

Improved Armor HUD

Rustic adds a subtle HUD element that displays the current durability of your equipped armor and held items above the experience bar. This can be toggled or moved in the configuration file.

Ropes and Chains

  • Ropes: Can be climbed like ladders. They can be extended downwards by clicking the top rope segment with more rope.
  • Chains: Function similarly to ropes but are made of iron and have a higher blast resistance.
  • Grappling Hook: While not a primary focus, ropes can be used in conjunction with various mechanics to create vertical traversal systems.
