Overview#

Deeper and Darker is a content expansion for the Deep Dark. It builds on the sculk caves and the Ancient City with a brand-new dimension, a full set of sculk-themed gear, new blocks and items, and several new creatures - giving you a real reason to explore the darkest depths of the world.

Instead of treating the Deep Dark as a place to sneak through and avoid, this mod turns it into a full biome-and-dimension worth conquering. You dive into the sculk, gather its materials, craft powerful gear, open a portal to a whole new world, and fight the eerie mobs that live there. The reward is unique loot, strong armor, and a striking, glowing sculk aesthetic that feels like a natural extension of vanilla.

The main pillars of the mod are:

  • The Otherside - a new dark, sculk-covered dimension reached from an Ancient City.
  • Warden armor and matching sculk tools and weapons.
  • New sculk blocks and crafting items, including gloomslate and the Heart of the Deep.
  • New mobs such as the Stalker, Shattered, Sculk Snapper, Sludge, and Angler.

Getting Started#

The core loop is: find the Deep Dark, gather sculk materials, open the Otherside portal, craft your gear, and explore.

  1. Dig down and find a Deep Dark biome. Look for the dark sculk caves deep underground, and the large Ancient City structure built from reinforced deepslate.
  2. Gather sculk materials. Mine sculk blocks and collect the mod's crafting items as you explore the caves.
  3. Build and activate an Otherside portal using reinforced deepslate as the frame (see Otherside Dimension below).
  4. Craft the Warden gear. Use the materials you collect to make Warden armor, tools, and weapons.
  5. Explore the Otherside for its unique blocks, loot, and mobs - and be ready to fight the new sculk creatures that hunt you.

Bring good armor, food, and a light source: the Deep Dark and the Otherside are both dark and dangerous.

Otherside Dimension#

The Otherside is the headline feature - a whole new dimension you reach from the Deep Dark.

Reaching it. You build a portal inside (or from) an Ancient City, using the reinforced deepslate that makes up the city as the portal frame, then activate it. Stepping through takes you to the Otherside.

What it's like. The Otherside is a gloomy, sculk-covered realm lit only by an eerie blue glow. Expect:

  • Glowing sculk terrain and floors that give off a soft light.
  • Gloomslate stone and its variants making up the landscape.
  • Fossilised remains and natural columns rising out of the ground.
  • Hidden treasure and the mod's unique blocks and mobs scattered throughout.

It is a high-risk, high-reward place: dangerous creatures roam it, but it is also where you find the mod's rarest materials and loot. Treat it like the Nether or the End - somewhere you prepare for before you travel.

Warden Armor & Sculk Gear#

Deeper and Darker adds a complete set of Warden armor plus matching sculk tools and weapons.

Warden Armor

The Warden set is a powerful late-game armor crafted from materials gathered in the depths. It has a distinctive sculk look, including a custom horned helmet with sensory tendrils, and the full set (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots) renders on your character. It fits the Deep Dark theme perfectly and rewards the effort of exploring the sculk caves and the Otherside.

Sculk Tools & Weapons

Alongside the armor there is a matching set of sculk tools and weapons - such as a sword and other gear - so you can equip yourself from head to toe in Deep Dark style. These are crafted from the same family of materials you gather underground.

Resonarium Armor

There is also a second, lighter Resonarium armor set for players who want an alternative look and playstyle to the heavy Warden gear.

To make any of this, gather the mod's sculk crafting materials (see Blocks & Items) and craft the pieces at a crafting table.

New Mobs#

The mod adds several new creatures that live in the sculk caves and the Otherside, making both places feel dangerous and alive.

Stalker

A tall, dark creature with pale sensory tendrils. Like the Warden, it hunts by sound, so moving quietly helps you avoid it. It is one of the most threatening mobs in the mod.

Shattered

A broken, corrupted humanoid that lurks in the dark - an unsettling enemy to run into deep underground.

Sculk Snapper

A small biting creature that snaps at you. Individually weak, but a nuisance when you are dealing with bigger threats.

Sludge

A slow, translucent slime-like blob that oozes through the sculk world. It moves sluggishly but can wear you down if you ignore it.

Angler

A lurking fish that hides in the darker, watery parts of the world.

These mobs spawn in the Deep Dark caves and in the Otherside. Because some of them (like the Stalker) react to sound, sneaking and managing noise is a real survival tactic.

Blocks & Items#

Deeper and Darker introduces many new blocks and items, all with their own textures and models so the whole set feels like a natural part of the Deep Dark.

Building & terrain blocks

  • New sculk building blocks for constructing in the Deep Dark style.
  • Gloomslate and its variants - the stone that makes up much of the Otherside.
  • Decorative blocks and a decorated-pot style block for theming your builds.

Crafting materials

  • The Heart of the Deep and other special materials used to craft the mod's gear.
  • Additional sculk-themed ingredients gathered from the caves and the Otherside.

Tools, gear & trinkets

  • The Warden and Resonarium armor sets.
  • Sculk tools and weapons (including a sword).
  • New tools and trinkets that tie into the Deep Dark theme.

Collect these materials while exploring, then use them at a crafting table to build the mod's blocks and equipment.

Tips#

  • Manage your noise. Some mobs, like the Stalker, hunt by sound. Sneak and avoid sprinting or breaking blocks near them.
  • Prepare before the Otherside. Bring armor, food, and blocks - the Otherside is dark and full of hostile creatures, so don't travel there under-equipped.
  • Use the reinforced deepslate. You need it to frame the Otherside portal, so plan your Ancient City visit around gathering or building near it.
  • Craft the Warden set early-ish. It's strong armor that makes exploring the Deep Dark and the Otherside far safer.
  • Light up your base. The sculk world is very dark; carry a reliable light source and place lighting as you go.
  • Gather extra materials. The Heart of the Deep and gloomslate are needed for the mod's best gear and blocks, so collect more than you think you need.
  • Watch for treasure. The Otherside hides loot and fossilised remains worth searching for.

FAQ & Troubleshooting#

How do I get to the Otherside? Build a portal from reinforced deepslate (the material the Ancient City is made of) inside or from an Ancient City in the Deep Dark, then activate it and step through.

Where do I find the materials for the armor? Explore the Deep Dark caves and the Otherside. Mine sculk blocks and gloomslate and collect the mod's crafting items, including the Heart of the Deep, then craft the gear at a crafting table.

Why is the Stalker so hard to escape? The Stalker hunts by sound, much like the Warden. Crouch, move slowly, and avoid making noise to slip past it.

What's the difference between Warden and Resonarium armor? Warden armor is the heavier, late-game set with the custom horned helmet; Resonarium is a lighter alternative set for a different look and feel.

Is the Otherside dangerous? Yes - it is a high-risk, high-reward dimension full of hostile sculk creatures. Go in prepared with good armor, food, and light, and you'll be rewarded with unique blocks and loot.

Do the new mobs spawn in the normal world? They live in the sculk areas - the Deep Dark caves and the Otherside - so you'll meet them wherever the sculk is, not out in ordinary biomes.
