Ancient Manuscripts Mod (1.20.1, 1.19.2) is a mod that introduces long-lost pages torn from mystical tomes. These pages can be discovered in chests throughout the world and assembled into enchanted books using specially crafted glue. This glue must be produced and applied with care to preserve the magical integrity of the manuscripts. Increasing the number of pages used results in stronger enchantments.

Experienced librarian villagers may possess manuscript pages and can be convinced to trade them. Wandering traders may also carry such pages, though they typically demand high prices. Witches occasionally use these manuscripts for spellcasting and may drop pages upon defeat.

Enchantments and Configuration

  • Curse enchantments are disabled by default but can be enabled.
  • An option exists to restrict selection to vanilla enchantments only.
  • Treasure enchantments (e.g., Mending) are disabled by default but can be toggled.

Enchantment Blacklisting

  • A JSON file (ancient_manuscripts_blacklist.json) in the config directory allows blocking specific enchantments.
  • Format: specify mod ID and enchantment name(s), or use * to block all enchantments from a mod.
  • The file is automatically generated if missing.
  • On servers, the server-side config overrides client-side settings.
  • Blacklist affects only the Ancient Manuscripts binding system, not enchantments obtained through other means.

Binding Table

  • Crafted using three logs, two wooden fences, and one book.
  • Supports multiple wood types (oak, dark oak, spruce, birch, acacia, jungle, mangrove, warped stem, crimson stem, cherry, bamboo), affecting only appearance.
  • Right-click to use once placed.

Empty Glue Bottle

  • Crafted from a stick, a feather, and an empty bottle.
  • Reusable and returned to the player once the glue is depleted.

Enchanted Book Glue

  • Crafting ingredients:
    • Bucket of water
    • Honeycomb
    • Bone meal
    • Glowstone dust
    • Slime ball
    • Empty glue bottle (or a partially used bottle with ≤50% remaining)
  • One bottle can bind 20 manuscript pages (configurable).
  • The bottle visually shows remaining glue and displays a tooltip with usage information.

Binding Random Enchanted Books

  • Place manuscript pages onto the Binding Table to determine enchantment rarity:
    • 1 page: Common
    • 2 pages: Uncommon
    • 3 pages: Rare
    • 4 pages: Very Rare
  • Insert book glue in the top-left slot and a book (or enchanted book, if enabled) in the book slot to begin binding.
  • Binding takes 15 seconds (configurable) and includes a progress indicator.
  • The process stops if:
    • All pages are removed
    • The book is removed
    • The glue bottle is removed or is empty
    • Remaining glue is insufficient for the number of pages
  • Glue is consumed during binding, and the empty bottle is returned when fully used.
  • To guarantee the highest enchantment level, a diamond may be placed in the diamond slot (configurable; may be disabled). Diamonds are consumed only when the enchantment has levels.
  • If binding cannot proceed, the progress indicator displays a red X. Possible causes:
    • No valid enchantments available due to blacklist or existing book enchantments
    • No book inserted
    • No glue, or glue bottle is empty
    • Insufficient glue for the number of pages
