Overview#
Darker Depths is an atmospheric expansion mod designed to transform the underground world of Minecraft. Moving beyond the standard cave generation, it adds three distinct biomes—the Glowshroom Forest, Sandy Catacombs, and Molten Cavern—each with its own ecosystem, hazards, and progression materials. The mod focuses on high-quality visuals, unique mob behaviors (such as the soul-binding Void Souls), and utility items like the Death Anchor and Crystal Melons that offer powerful late-game advantages.
Biomes#
Glowshroom Forest
A bioluminescent cavern filled with giant fungi and shimmering vegetation. It is the most vibrant of the new biomes but contains territorial guardians.
- Key Features: Large Glowshrooms, Glimmering Vines, Glowspurs.
- Primary Blocks: Mossy Grimestone, Glowshroom Stems, Glowshroom Caps.
- Atmosphere: Emits a soft green/blue light; spores often drift through the air.
Sandy Catacombs
A desolate, arid underground wasteland found beneath desert regions. It is home to ancient structures and soul-less entities.
- Key Features: Petrified Roots, Boulders, Aridrock formations.
- Primary Blocks: Aridrock, Duskrock (formerly Limestone), Cobbled Sandstone.
- Atmosphere: Dusty and claustrophobic, often containing the massive Catacombs structure.
Molten Cavern
A high-temperature volcanic biome where the very stone has been altered by extreme heat.
- Key Features: Geysers, Lava Pools, Darkslate Spikes.
- Primary Blocks: Darkslate (Heated variants), Magma Pads, Scorched Remains.
- Atmosphere: Filled with ash particles and frequent lava springs.
Mobs#
The mod introduces several custom entities with unique AI and death mechanics.
| Mob | Health | Damage | Behavior | Drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glowshroom Monster | 30 | 12 | Territorial; will wind up a heavy attack if the player is close. | Glowshrooms, Glowgrime |
| Body Snatcher | 15 | 4 | Small and fast; dashes at players from over 10 blocks away. | Transforms into Void Soul |
| Void Soul Knight | 50 | 8 | Dormant until approached; tracks players through walls; uses an uppercut attack. | Transforms into Void Soul |
| Scorcher | 40 | Variable | A large eye that deals increasing fire damage the longer it stares at a target. | Magma Cream |
| Void Soul | Invulnerable | N/A | A floating orb that appears when a Catacombs mob dies. Expires after 60s. | N/A (Can be captured) |
Void Soul Mechanics
When mobs in the Sandy Catacombs are defeated, they do not die traditionally. Instead, they release a Void Soul.
- Capturing: Use a Glass Bottle on a Void Soul to create a Void Soul Jar.
- Preservation: Right-click a Void Soul with Amber to prevent it from expiring, allowing it to wander indefinitely.
Blocks#
Specialized Stone Types
- Darkslate: Found in Molten Caverns. It has 5 "heat stages" (0-4). It becomes heated when adjacent to lava or magma blocks.
- Aridrock: The primary stone of the Sandy Catacombs. It is rotatable and comes in polished and brick variants.
- Duskrock: A dark, easily breakable stone found in the lower layers of the Catacombs.
- Grimestone: Found in Glowshroom Forests; can be used to craft basic tools, furnaces, and brewing stands.
Functional Blocks
- Geyser: Found in Molten Caverns. Periodically bursts, launching entities upward. Powering it with Redstone halts the bursts; unpowering it causes an immediate burst.
- Paranoia Altar: The centerpiece of the Catacombs. While locked, it is indestructible and summons Body Snatchers. Use a Void Soul Requiem to unlock and break it.
- Tomb: Large 3x2 containers found in Catacombs treasure rooms. They contain Forsaken Bronze Scrap.
- Petrified Wood: Non-flammable wood type. Created by placing logs above ignited Soul Soil.
Items & Equipment#
Forsaken Bronze
Forsaken Bronze is the primary progression metal of the mod, crafted by combining Forsaken Bronze Scrap (found in Tombs) with Copper Ingots.
| Item | Description | Stats |
|---|---|---|
| Stiletto | A dagger-type weapon with a dash ability. | 5 Attack Damage, +50% Attack Speed |
| Death Anchor | Teleports the player back to its location upon death. | Consumes a Void Soul Requiem to activate |
| Void Soul Requiem | An item used to remove all curses from equipment in an anvil. | Costs 25 XP levels |
Crystal Melons
Crystal Melons are powerful utility items grown through a multi-stage process:
- Find a Dead Living Crystal in Molten Caverns.
- Right-click it with a Diamond to revive it.
- Place a Watermelon near the Living Crystal to convert it into a Stone Melon.
- Wait for it to mature into a Crystal Melon.
Effect: When held in the off-hand, it grants a 5-minute "Supercharge" buff: +20% Attack Speed, +20% Mining Speed, +20% Attack Damage, and infinite durability for the main-hand tool.
Utility Items
- Glowshroom Cap: A wearable helmet that provides light and the Haste I effect.
- Rope: A placeable climbing tool. Can be extended downwards by right-clicking the top segment.
- Amber: Used to preserve Void Souls or craft decorative light sources.
Mechanics#
Paranoia Effect
Triggered by the Paranoia Altar in the Catacombs. It acts as a lighter version of Blindness that zooms the FOV and creates false footstep sounds to disorient the player.
Fog Distance Modifiers:
- Void Soul Torch: +100% visibility
- Standard Torch: +40% visibility
- Redstone Torch: +20% visibility
- Soul Torch: -30% visibility (Decreases visibility)
World Generation
- Rope Mines: Small surface structures found in Forests and Deserts that provide a direct vertical shaft into the deeper cave systems.
- Petrified Mineshafts: Rare variants of standard mineshafts made entirely of Petrified Wood, found within the mod's custom biomes.
