Overview#

Dragon Survival is a comprehensive modification that transforms the player into a dragon. Unlike mods that add rideable mounts, this mod changes the player's model, inventory, and core gameplay mechanics. Players can choose to remain human or undergo a transformation into one of three species: the poisonous Forest Dragon, the fire-resistant Cave Dragon, or the aquatic Sea Dragon.

The mod features a deep progression system including growth stages (from Newborn to Adult), a mana-based magic system with 36 unique skills, and specialized equipment. In version 1.21.1, the mod is 90% data-driven, allowing for extensive customization and the creation of custom dragon species via datapacks.

Becoming a Dragon#

To begin the transformation, a player must first create a Dragon Altar. This process involves gathering materials typically found through mining or exploration.

The Transformation Process

  1. Collect Dragon Dust: Found as a rare drop (~1% chance) when mining experience-dropping ores like Coal, Lapis Lazuli, Diamond, or Redstone. Dragons have a higher drop rate than humans.
  2. Craft Dragon Bones: Combine 9 Dragon Dust to create a Dragon Bone.
  3. Create the Altar: Use a Dragon Bone on specific blocks (Stone, Oak Log, Sandstone, or Mossy Cobblestone) to transform the block into a Dragon Altar.
  4. Selection: Right-click the Altar to open the selection menu. You can choose to become a Forest, Cave, or Sea dragon, or revert to a Human.

Note: Choosing a species for the first time is free, but subsequent changes may require specific items like the Dragon Soul to preserve progress.

Dragon Species#

Each species has unique innate abilities, dietary requirements, and environmental weaknesses.

Species Habitat Diet Primary Magic Weakness
Forest Dragon Forests Raw Meat, Plants Nature/Poison Darkness (causes stress/hunger)
Cave Dragon Caves/Nether Coal, Charred Meat Fire/Earth Water/Rain (causes damage)
Sea Dragon Oceans/Rivers Fish Water/Lightning Dehydration (must stay wet)

Forest Dragon

  • Abilities: Can fell trees without tools; increased damage when enriched.
  • Mana Regen: Regenerates mana under direct sunlight and while standing on grass.
  • Innate Skills: Cliffhanger (reduced fall damage), Light the Dark (resistance to darkness).

Cave Dragon

  • Abilities: Can mine stone blocks without tools; immune to fire and lava.
  • Mana Regen: Regenerates mana when standing on hot blocks (Magma, Fire).
  • Innate Skills: Lava Vision, Sturdy Skin (natural armor), Fireball.

Sea Dragon

  • Abilities: Can dig sand and gravel without tools; infinite underwater breathing.
  • Mana Regen: Regenerates mana in water or snow.
  • Innate Skills: Sea Vision (night vision underwater), Storm Breath (lightning), Spectral Impact (armor penetration).

Growth and Development#

Dragons grow naturally over time, but this process can be accelerated using specific catalysts. Growth increases the dragon's size, health, and harvesting capabilities.

Growth Stages

Stage Natural Duration Catalyst Item Size Health
Newborn 3 Hours Dragon Heart Shard 1 Block 14-19 HP
Young 1 Day Weak Dragon Heart 2 Blocks 20-29 HP
Adult 3 Days Elder Dragon Heart 3 Blocks 30+ HP

Growth Items

  • Dragon Heart Shard: Dropped by the Ender Dragon or found in high-tier loot chests. Used for Newborn growth.
  • Weak Dragon Heart: Crafted using a Dragon Heart Shard, Gold Nuggets, and Lapis Lazuli. Used for Young growth.
  • Elder Dragon Heart: Crafted using Diamonds, Gold, and Netherite Scraps. Used to reach Adulthood.
  • Star Bone: Reduces the dragon's growth stage.
  • Star Heart: Stops natural growth entirely.

Mechanics#

Flight

All dragons possess the ability to fly.

  • Toggle Wings: Press C to open/close wings.
  • Flight Mode: Press G to toggle flight. Flight consumes hunger and stamina.
  • Spin Skill: A high-speed aerial maneuver obtained from structures in The End. It deals massive melee damage to enemies in the flight path.

Magic and Mana

Dragons use a Mana system to cast active spells.

  • Mana Bar: Displayed on the right side of the HUD.
  • Meditation: Crouching and right-clicking allows the dragon to meditate for 10 seconds, granting a temporary buff of infinite mana.
  • Source of Magic: A block that can be charged with Elder Dragon Dust to provide a permanent mana-recharging station.

Dragon Inventory

Dragons have a specialized inventory accessed via the standard key.

  • 3x3 Crafting: Built-in crafting grid available at all times.
  • Claw Slots: Tools (Pickaxes, Axes, Shovels) can be equipped in the claw panel to improve mining efficiency without holding the item.
  • Armor: Dragons can wear specialized Dragon Armor (Gold, Diamond, Netherite) and certain vanilla items like the Turtle Helmet.

Mobs#

The mod introduces entities that interact specifically with the player's dragon status.

Mob Spawn Condition Behavior Drops
Dragon Hunter Spawns when a dragon attacks villagers. Aggressive; uses specialized weapons to hunt dragons. Iron/Diamond weapons, Crossbows.
Hunter Spearman Found in Hunter Castles. Attacks with Partisans; highly coordinated. Partisan, Chainmail armor.
Hunter Leader Rare spawn in Hunter structures. Buffs nearby hunters; high health. Spearman Promotion item.
Magical Predators World spawn. Aggressive creatures that hunt young dragons. Predator Star, Experience.

Note: Peaceful animals (Cows, Sheep, etc.) will naturally flee from dragons unless a Dragon Beacon of Peace is active.
