Overview#

Occultism is a ritual magic mod inspired by the 'Bartimaeus Sequence' books. It allows players to summon spirits (demons) from the 'Otherworld' to perform various tasks. Unlike traditional tech mods that use machines and cables, Occultism uses pentacles, sacrificial bowls, and spirit contracts. Key features include a massive dimensional storage system, high-yield ore crushing, automated mining, and powerful enchanted tools.

Getting Started#

The journey into the occult begins with nature and fire. Follow these steps to establish your first contact with the Otherworld.

The Dictionary of Spirits

The Dictionary of Spirits is the essential in-game guide. It contains all ritual layouts (Pentacles) and detailed instructions.

  • Crafting: Combine a Book with a Demon's Dream Seed.
  • Obtaining Seeds: Break tall grass to find Demon's Dream Seeds.

Spiritfire

Spiritfire is a cold, blue flame used to transform mundane items into magical components. It does not damage players or blocks.

  1. Place a Demon's Dream Seed on the ground.
  2. Light the seed on fire using Flint and Steel.
  3. The fire will turn blue. Drop items into this fire to transform them.

The Third Eye

Many Otherworld resources are hidden in plain sight. By eating a Demon's Dream Seed, you gain the Third Eye effect, allowing you to see and harvest Otherstone (disguised as Andesite) and Otherworld Trees (disguised as Oak). To make this permanent, craft Otherworld Goggles.

Ritual Mechanics#

Rituals are the core of the mod. They require a specific physical layout and a set of ingredients.

Components

  • Golden Bowl: The centerpiece of every ritual. This is where the main ingredient (usually a Book of Binding) is placed.
  • Sacrificial Bowls: Placed around the Golden Bowl to hold additional ingredients.
  • Chalk: Used to draw Pentacles on the ground. There are four types: White, Golden, Purple, and Red.
  • Ritual Satchel: A tool that stores chalk and can automatically draw pentacles if the player has the required materials.

The Ritual Process

  1. Build the Pentacle: Use the Dictionary of Spirits to visualize the required chalk pattern.
  2. Place Bowls: Position the Golden Bowl in the center and Sacrificial Bowls within the ritual area.
  3. Add Ingredients: Place the secondary items into the Sacrificial Bowls.
  4. Activate: Right-click the Golden Bowl with the primary catalyst (e.g., a Book of Binding or a specific spirit essence).
  5. Sacrifice (Optional): Some high-tier rituals require killing a specific mob (like a Cow or Chicken) near the Golden Bowl during the process.

Spirits and Tiers#

Spirits are categorized into four tiers based on their power and the complexity of the ritual required to summon them.

Tier Name Common Uses
1 Foliot Basic automation, item transport, 2x ore crushing.
2 Djinni Advanced mining, 3x ore crushing, lumberjacking.
3 Afrit High-tier resource generation, 4x ore crushing.
4 Marid Master-level tasks, 6x ore crushing, infinite mining.

Spirit Roles

  • Crushers: Turn raw ores into dust. Higher tiers provide higher multipliers (up to 6x for Raw Ore Blocks).
  • Lumberjacks: Automatically fell trees and replant saplings in a designated area.
  • Miners: When placed in a Dimensional Mineshaft, they generate ores over time without destroying the world.
  • Janitors: Pick up items on the ground and move them to a designated chest.

Dimensional Storage System#

The Dimensional Storage Actuator is a powerful alternative to digital storage mods. It stores items in a pocket dimension.

Components

  • Storage Actuator: The main interface block. Base capacity is limited.
  • Storage Stabilizers: Placed facing the Actuator (up to 4) to increase storage capacity significantly. Higher tiers (Tier 1-4) provide more space.
  • Storage Remote: Allows access to the storage from anywhere in the same dimension. Can be upgraded to work across dimensions.
  • Stable Wormhole: A block that acts as a remote access point for the storage system, allowing for automation with hoppers or pipes.

Items and Tools#

Iesnium

Iesnium is a magical metal found in the Nether. It is required for high-tier rituals and tools.

  • Discovery: It is invisible to the naked eye. You must use the Third Eye effect or Otherworld Goggles to see Iesnium Ore.
  • Mining: Can only be mined with an Infused Pickaxe or by a summoned Djinni Miner.

Key Tools

  • Divination Rod: Used to find specific ores (like Otherstone or Iesnium) by resonating with the block.
  • Soul Gem: Used to capture and transport summoned spirits or vanilla mobs.
  • Infused Lenses: Used to craft Otherworld Goggles.
  • Butcher Knife: Increases the yield of sacrificial items (like Hoglin skins) needed for rituals.
Item Function
Chalk (White) Used for basic Foliot rituals.
Chalk (Golden) Used for Djinni and Afrit rituals.
Chalk (Purple) Used for Marid and high-tier binding.
Chalk (Red) Used for specialized summoning and possession.

Mobs#

Occultism adds several entities, both summoned allies and hostile possessed variants.

Summoned Spirits

These spirits appear when a ritual is completed. They generally do not despawn and will follow their owner's commands via a Spirit Lamp or Contract.

  • Foliot: Small, imp-like creatures.
  • Djinni: Tall, blue humanoid spirits.
  • Afrit: Large, fiery demonic entities.
  • Marid: Massive, fish-like powerful spirits.

Hostile/Possessed Mobs

Some rituals intentionally summon hostile versions of mobs to obtain rare drops.

  • Possessed Enderman: Drops Endereyes and specialized spirit dust.
  • Possessed Skeleton: Drops high amounts of bone meal and specialized arrows.
  • Wild Spirits: If a ritual fails or is interrupted, a wild, hostile version of the spirit may spawn and attack the player.

Pentacles#

Pentacles are the geometric patterns required for rituals. Each has a specific name and purpose.

  • Aviar's Circle: The simplest pentacle, used for summoning Foliots and basic item transformations.
  • Pyramid of Zoroth: A mid-tier structure used for Djinni summoning and the Dimensional Mineshaft.
  • The Great Circle of Astral Projection: Used for traveling to the Otherworld or summoning powerful Afrits.
  • Marid's Master Sigil: The most complex pentacle, requiring all four chalk colors and a large area, used for Marid spirits.

Advanced Automation#

The Dimensional Mineshaft

By placing a Djinni or Marid into a Dimensional Mineshaft, the spirit will 'mine' in the Otherworld and bring back ores. This process requires Mining Picks (consumables) which the spirit uses up over time. Marid miners have a chance to bring back rare ores like Diamonds, Emeralds, and Iesnium.

Ore Doubling (and Sextupling)

Occultism provides the highest ore processing yields in modern Minecraft.

  1. Foliot Crusher: 2x dust from raw ore.
  2. Djinni Crusher: 3x dust from raw ore.
  3. Afrit Crusher: 4x dust from raw ore.
  4. Marid Crusher: 6x dust when processing Raw Ore Blocks (e.g., Raw Gold Block).
