Overview#
The Betweenlands is a large and expansive mod that adds a whole new dimension to Minecraft. This dimension is a dark, swampy world filled with mystery, danger, and unique life forms. Unlike the Overworld, the Betweenlands features its own ecosystem, progression system, and survival mechanics that force players to adapt to a hostile environment where even the air and water can be deadly.
To enter the Betweenlands, players must first locate a Druid Circle in the Overworld's swamp biomes. These structures are guarded by Dark Druids, who drop Swamp Talisman Shards. Once four shards are collected, they can be placed on the central altar to craft a Swamp Talisman. Using this talisman on a sapling will grow a massive Portal Tree, which contains the gateway to the dimension.
Core Mechanics#
Survival in the Betweenlands is governed by several unique mechanics that distinguish it from standard Minecraft gameplay.
Decay
Decay is a survival mechanic represented by a bar of Sap Balls above the hunger bar. Simply existing in the dimension causes decay to increase (the bar to decrease). As decay progresses, the player's skin turns green, and they suffer from reduced maximum health and movement speed. Decay can be restored by consuming Sap Jello, Reed Donuts, or Weeping Blue Petals.
Corrosion
Betweenlands tools and weapons are subject to corrosion. Over time, items will become grimy and less effective, eventually losing up to 50% of their damage and mining speed. Corrosion can be prevented by coating items with Scabyst or repaired using a Purifier. Non-Betweenlands equipment is generally ineffective or breaks instantly in the dimension.
Food Sickness
Eating the same food repeatedly will cause the player to become "sick" of it. The food's effectiveness will decrease until it provides almost no hunger or decay restoration. Eating a variety of foods or consuming Chiromaw Wings can reset this sickness.
Middle Gem Circle
The Middle Gem Circle is a combat mechanic involving three gems: Aqua, Crimson, and Green. These gems function in a rock-paper-scissors relationship. Equipping gems on armor and weapons provides bonuses against mobs of the opposing gem type.
Biomes#
The Betweenlands is divided into several distinct biomes, each with its own flora, fauna, and hazards.
| Biome | Description | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| Swamplands | The most common biome, filled with Weedwood trees and thick vegetation. | Weedwood, Rubber Trees, Sap Trees |
| Patchy Islands | A series of small islands separated by shallow swamp water. | Dragonfly spawns, Bulb Capped Mushrooms |
| Coarse Islands | Elevated islands held up by massive roots. | Cragrock, Valonite Ore, Root Sprites |
| Sludge Plains | A desolate, muddy wasteland with very little vegetation. | Tar Pools, Sludge, Tar Beasts |
| Deep Waters | Large bodies of water that hide underwater ruins and dangerous aquatic life. | Anglers, Lurkers, Cragrock Spires |
| Marsh | A flat, foggy area with poisonous gas clouds and hidden terrors. | Peat Mummies, Gas Clouds, Shallowbreaths |
| Raised Isles | Islands floating high in the sky, supported by giant roots. | Chiromaw Matriarch Nests |
Mobs#
The creatures of the Betweenlands range from harmless insects to gargantuan horrors.

Passive & Neutral Mobs
- Frog: Small amphibians that can be farmed for frog legs.
- Gecko: Can be captured in a net and used for Gecko Testing to discover herblore aspects.
- Dragonfly: Flying insects that can be used as a source of food or bait.
- Anadia: A variety of fish that can be caught using a Betweenlands fishing rod.
Bosses
- Sludge Menace (600 HP): A massive tentacled horror found at the bottom of the Sludgeon. It attacks with sludge projectiles and slams.
- Primordial Malevolence (320 HP): A sphere of energy found atop the Wight Fortress. It requires the player to reflect its projectiles to break its shields.
- Dreadful Peat Mummy: A summoned boss that is significantly stronger than standard Peat Mummies.
- Spirit Tree: A sentient tree boss that protects its core with wisps and faces.
Resources & Items#
The Betweenlands features a unique tier of materials that replace standard Minecraft ores.
Ores & Materials
- Sulfur: The primary fuel source for the Betweenlands, used in torches and furnaces.
- Slimy Bone: Used for basic tools and armor (equivalent to stone/leather).
- Syrmorite: A blue metal used for mid-tier equipment and buckets (equivalent to iron).
- Octine: A glowing orange metal that sets enemies on fire; used for tools and the Infuser (equivalent to gold/iron).
- Valonite: The rarest and strongest material, used for high-tier gear (equivalent to diamond).
- Scabyst: A blue crystal used to coat items and prevent corrosion.
- Life Crystal: A rare resource found in underwater caves, used to power machines like the Animator.
Tools & Equipment
- Sickle: Essential for harvesting plants without destroying them.
- Purifier: Uses sulfur and water to clean corroded items and turn items like Slimy Bone Ore into usable materials.
- Animator: Uses Life Crystals to bring inanimate objects to life, such as turning a Tar Beast Heart into a minion.

Herblore & Alchemy#
Herblore is a complex system for creating Infusions, which are the Betweenlands' version of potions.
- Gathering: Use a Sickle to collect various plants and flowers.
- Grinding: Use a Mortar and Pestle to grind plants into ground ingredients.
- Gecko Testing: Place a Gecko in a cage and feed it ground ingredients. The Gecko's reaction reveals the Aspects (hidden properties) of the plant, which are recorded in the Herblore Book.
- Infusing: Place an Infuser over a fire, fill it with water, and add ground ingredients. Stir the mixture to create an infusion. If successful, the infusion can be bottled into Dentrothyst Vials.
- Distilling: Use an Alembic to further refine infusions or extract pure Aspects into vials for later use.
Structures#
The dimension is dotted with ruins and massive dungeons that offer high-tier loot and challenges.
- Cragrock Tower: A tall, crumbling spire filled with spawners and loot chests. The top often contains a Swift Pick.
- Wight Fortress: A massive obsidian-like castle guarded by Wights. It houses the Primordial Malevolence boss.
- Sludgeon: A labyrinthine underground dungeon filled with sludge and traps, leading to the Sludge Menace.
- Idol Head Statue: Large stone heads found in Patchy Islands that contain hidden treasure.
- Tar Pool Dungeon: Small underground rooms containing a tar pool and a Tar Beast spawner.
