Overview#
In vanilla Minecraft the sun and moon are simple flat squares painted onto the sky. Cubic Sun and Moon replaces them with chunky, three-dimensional cubes that match the game's blocky look.
The sun becomes a glowing cube during the day, and the moon becomes a cube that cycles through all eight lunar phases at night. Vanilla colours and lighting are kept, so sunrises, sunsets and moonlit nights still feel natural - only the shape of the sun and moon changes.
What It Changes#
The pack only touches a small number of sky textures:
| Element | Change |
|---|---|
| Sun | Rendered as a bright 3D cube |
| Moon | Rendered as a 3D cube with 8 cubic phases |
| Painting | One lightly retextured painting (bonus) |
Everything else in the game keeps its default textures, which is what makes the pack so lightweight.
Installing the Pack#
- Download the pack
.zipfile. - Place the
.zipinto your.minecraft/resourcepacksfolder (do not unzip it). - Launch Minecraft and open Options -> Resource Packs.
- Move Cubic Sun and Moon from the left (available) list to the right (selected) list.
- Click Done. Wait for the next day/night cycle and look up to see the cubic sun and moon.
The pack can be turned on or off at any time from the same screen.
Compatibility#
Because it changes so little, Cubic Sun and Moon works alongside almost everything:
- Shaders - works with shader packs such as BSL and Complementary, as long as the shader does not draw its own sun and moon.
- Space mods - includes matching support for Ad Astra, Astrocraft, Galacticraft and Stellar View, so those mods' celestial bodies fit the cubic style too.
- Other resource packs - can be layered above other packs, since it only overrides the sun and moon.
It is textures only - no mods or loaders are required, and it makes no gameplay changes.
Notes#
- Updated for Minecraft 26.2 using the new
celestialsky texture layout, so the cubic sun and moon appear correctly on the latest version. - The pack is very small and has no performance impact.
- If a shader replaces the sun and moon, disable that shader option to see the cubic versions.
- Safe to add to or remove from any world at any time.
