Overview#
Water Strainer is a resource-gathering mod designed to automate the collection of common materials found in water. By placing a Strainer Base underwater and equipping it with various types of Strainers, players can filter the water to obtain items such as sand, gravel, sticks, clay, and fish. The mod features a deep efficiency system where water flow, biome type, and proximity to other bases affect the speed of resource collection. It is highly compatible with automation mods and is a staple for Skyblock-style gameplay.

Blocks#
Strainer Base
The Strainer Base is the core block of the mod. It must be placed underwater with at least one water source block directly above it to function. It features an internal inventory for the strainer, bait, and collected loot.
- Function: Holds the strainer and collects items.
- Automation: Items can be extracted from the bottom using hoppers or pipes. Bait and strainers can be inserted from the sides.
Worm Bin
The Worm Bin is a functional block used to produce bait. By placing organic materials (food, plants) into the bin, it will slowly compost them into Worms and Fertilizer.
- Function: Passive worm and fertilizer production.
- Input: Most organic items and food.
- Output: Worms (Bait) and Fertilizer (acts as Bone Meal).

Items and Tools#
Tools
- Garden Trowel: Used to dig up worms from the ground. Right-clicking Grass blocks has a 25% chance to drop a worm, while Farmland has a 50% chance.
- Efficiency Meter: A diagnostic tool. Right-clicking a Strainer Base with this meter displays its current efficiency percentage and lists the factors (biome, water flow, etc.) affecting it.
Bait and Components
- Worm: The standard bait for Fisherman's Strainers. Can be found using a Garden Trowel or produced in a Worm Bin.
- Super Worm: A rare, more effective version of the standard worm.
- Bait Pot: A utility item that can be placed in the Strainer Base's bait slot. It holds up to 80 worms and significantly reduces bait consumption rates.
- Net / Dense Net: Crafting components used to create the various tiers of strainers.
- Fertilizer: A byproduct of the Worm Bin that functions identically to Bone Meal.
Strainer Types and Tiers#
Strainers are the consumable components that determine what loot is gathered. They come in different tiers and specialized versions.

Strainer Tiers
| Tier | Durability | Efficiency Bonus | Enchantable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | 120 uses | +0% | No |
| Solid | 720 uses | +10% | No |
| Reinforced | 8,640 uses | +25% | Yes |
Specialized Versions
- Survivalist's Strainer: Collects general resources like sand, gravel, and clay.
- Wide Version: Filters for large items only (Sticks, Planks).
- Tight Version: Filters for small items only (Sand, Gold Nuggets).
- Fisherman's Strainer: Collects fish, junk, and treasure. Requires Bait to function. Unlike others, the Fisherman's Strainer does not have durability; instead, it consumes one bait per item caught.
Mechanics and Efficiency#
The speed at which a Strainer Base catches items is determined by its Efficiency. A base attempts to catch an item every 25–35 seconds by default, but this time is modified by the following factors:
Placement Factors
- Water Flow: Flowing water provides a +10% efficiency bonus. Still water (source blocks) provides no bonus.
- Water Height: The base must have water directly above it. Efficiency drops by 3% for every block of distance between the base and the water source block.
- Proximity: Placing Strainer Bases too close together causes interference. Every Strainer Base within an 8-block radius reduces efficiency by 15%.
Biome Bonuses
Building your Strainer Base in specific biomes provides a significant passive boost:
- River: +20% Bonus
- Beach: +15% Bonus
- Deep Ocean: +10% Bonus
Enchantments
Reinforced Strainers can be enchanted to improve performance:
- Efficiency: Decreases the idle time between catches.
- Unbreaking: Increases the durability of the strainer.
- Fortune: Increases the quantity of items caught per cycle.
- Luck of the Sea: Increases the chance of receiving rare loot (Fisherman's Strainer only).
Crafting Recipes#
Below are the primary recipes for the Water Strainer mod.
| Item | Recipe Components |
|---|---|
| Strainer Base | 2 Iron Bars + 4 Wooden Planks + 1 Chest + 1 Hopper |
| Garden Trowel | 1 Stick + 1 Iron Ingot + 1 Dirt Block |
| Efficiency Meter | 1 Clock + 1 Redstone Torch + 3 Dyes (Any color) |
| Bait Pot | 1 Flower Pot + 1 Iron Bar |
| Survivalist Strainer | 8 Sticks + 1 String (Shaped) |
| Fisherman Strainer | 8 Bamboo/Sugar Cane + 1 String (Shaped) |
| Solid Strainer | Standard Strainer + Iron Ingots |
| Reinforced Strainer | Solid Strainer + Diamonds |

Loot Tables#
The items caught depend entirely on the strainer type equipped in the base.
Survivalist's Strainer Loot
- Common (70%): Sand, Gravel
- Uncommon (20%): Dirt, Clay Balls
- Rare (10%): Sticks, Stone, Planks, Gold Nuggets, Iron Nuggets
Fisherman's Strainer Loot
- Fish (50%): Raw Cod, Raw Salmon, Tropical Fish, Pufferfish
- Junk (15%): Sticks, String, Bowls, Leather Boots, Bones, Lily Pads
- Treasure (1%): Enchanted Books, Name Tags, Saddles, Bows
- Nothing (34%): The strainer occasionally fails to catch anything during a cycle.
Configuration#
The mod is highly customizable via the waterstrainer_loottable.cfg file located in the Minecraft config folder. Server owners and modpack creators can add custom items from other mods to the loot tables.
Config Syntax:
strainer_name | CATEGORY | modid:item_name | metadata | quantity | rarity
- Strainer Name: The internal name of the strainer (e.g.,
strainer_survivalist). - Rarity: A higher numerical value increases the drop chance relative to other items in the same category.
- Metadata: Used for items with sub-types (like wool colors or wood types).
