Overview#

Tough As Nails is a survival-based mod that increases the difficulty of Minecraft by adding two primary survival mechanics: Body Temperature and Thirst. Players must manage these new bars alongside health and hunger, making exploration and settlement much more strategic. The mod is designed to integrate seamlessly with vanilla Minecraft and other environmental mods like Biomes O' Plenty and Serene Seasons.

In modern versions (1.20.1 and 1.21.1), the mod focuses on environmental hazards rather than adding new mobs. The environment itself becomes the enemy, with extreme biomes and weather conditions posing a constant threat to the player's life.

Thirst Mechanic#

The Thirst bar is located above the hunger bar and consists of 20 points (10 water droplets). It depletes over time based on the player's activity, such as sprinting, jumping, and mining.

Drinking Water

Players can replenish thirst in several ways:

  • Direct Drinking: Shift + Right-click on a water source block with an empty hand. This provides a small amount of thirst but carries a high risk of the "Thirst" debuff.
  • Water Bottles: Drinking from a vanilla Glass Bottle. Unless purified, this also risks the "Thirst" debuff.
  • Canteens: Specialized containers that hold multiple drinks and can be purified.
  • Juices: Crafted from fruits and sugar, juices provide more thirst points and often grant additional benefits.

Water Quality

  • Dirty Water: Collected from most natural sources. Drinking it has a chance to apply the Thirst effect (similar to Hunger), which causes the thirst bar to deplete rapidly for 30 seconds.
  • Purified Water: Created by smelting water bottles in a furnace or using a Water Purifier. It is safe to drink and provides more hydration.
  • Rain Water: Collected via a Rain Collector. It is naturally purified and safe to drink.

Temperature Mechanic#

Body Temperature is represented by a circular orb located between the health and hunger bars. It reflects the player's current thermal state relative to the environment.

Temperature States

State Icon Effect
Icy Snowflake Causes Hypothermia; continuous damage and slowness.
Cold Blue Orb No immediate damage, but close to freezing.
Neutral Gray/White Orb The ideal state; no effects.
Warm Orange Orb No immediate damage, but close to overheating.
Hot Flame Causes Hyperthermia; continuous damage and nausea/blur.

Factors Affecting Temperature

  • Biomes: Deserts and Jungles are naturally hot; Tundras and Mountains are naturally cold.
  • Time of Day: Temperatures drop significantly at night.
  • Weather: Rain and snow cool the player down.
  • Blocks: Standing near Fire, Lava, or Lit Campfires provides heat. Standing near Ice or in Water provides cooling.
  • Armor: Wool armor provides warmth, while Jute/Leaf armor provides cooling.
  • Consumables: Ice Cream provides temporary cooling, while Charc-O's provide temporary heating.

Items#

Survival Equipment

  • Canteens: Available in Leather, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite tiers. Higher tiers have more durability and can hold more water. They can be enchanted with Water Cleansing to automatically purify water upon collection.
  • Thermometer: A handheld item that displays the current environmental temperature.
  • Charcoal Filter: A consumable item used in the Water Purifier to clean dirty water.
  • Wool Armor: A set of armor (Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, Boots) that provides high cold resistance.
  • Jute Armor: A set of armor that provides high heat resistance. Jute is obtained by breaking grass to find Jute Seeds.

Consumables

  • Juices: Apple, Cactus, Chorus, Glowberry, Melon, Pumpkin, and Sweet Berry. These stack to 16 and provide high hydration.
  • Ice Cream: A food item that provides a "Chilled" effect, temporarily lowering body temperature.
  • Charc-O's: A food item that provides an "Internal Warmth" effect, temporarily raising body temperature.

Blocks#

Utility Blocks

  • Rain Collector: When placed under an open sky during rain, it slowly fills with purified water. Players can right-click it with a bottle or canteen to fill them.
  • Water Purifier: A block that uses Charcoal Filters to turn Dirty Water into Purified Water. It requires a filter to operate.
  • Heating Coil: A block that, when powered by Redstone, emits heat in a small radius. Ideal for surviving winter in cold biomes.
  • Cooling Coil: A block that, when powered by Redstone, emits a cooling effect in a small radius. Ideal for desert bases.
  • Thermoregulator: An advanced block that uses Ice and Lava placed in adjacent slots to maintain a perfect neutral temperature in an enclosed space.
