In Minecraft, wheat is an item that you can add to your inventory by either farming with seeds or by using a crafting table.

Let’s explore how to add wheat to your inventory.

Where to find Wheat in Creative Mode

Platform is the platform that applies.

Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers where the item can be found in the menu location listed (we have tested and confirmed this version number).

Creative Menu Location is the location of the item in the Creative Inventory menu.

Required Materials to make Wheat

In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to craft wheat:

4 Seeds
1 Hay Bale
8 Bone Meal

How to get Wheat in Survival Mode

You can add wheat to your inventory in Survival mode by farming with seeds, water, and a hoe. So, let’s get started!

1. Find Land with Water

First, you need to find an area of land that has water.

2. Hold a Hoe

Next, you need to select a hoe in the hotbar so that you are holding it in your hand. These are the hoes you can choose from:

In this example, we are going to use a wooden hoe.

3. Hoe the Land

Next, you need to hoe the land next to the water. The game control to hoe the land depends on the version of Minecraft:

For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the block.
For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the block.
For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
For Nintendo Switch, press the ZL button on the controller.
For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the block.
For Education Edition, right click on the block.

This will prepare the ground and expose the soil for planting.

TIP: Once you have used the hoe on the blocks that you want to farm, they will look brown (because the grass has been removed). The blocks will begin to get wet from the water and change to a darker brown.

4. Plant the Seeds

Next, select your seeds in the hotbar and plant them on the soil. The game control to plant the seeds depends on the version of Minecraft:

For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the block.
For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the block.
For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
For Nintendo Switch, press the ZL button on the controller.
For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the block.
For Education Edition, right click on the block.

You should begin to see the plants grow. With time, your plants will grow to full size all on their own.

5. Fertilize with Bonemeal

You can speed up the growing process by using bone meal on the plants. The game control to use the bone meal depends on the version of Minecraft:

For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the block.
For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the block.
For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
For Nintendo Switch, press the ZL button on the controller.
For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the block.
For Education Edition, right click on the block.

6. Harvest the Wheat

Now that your farm is full-grown, you need to harvest the wheat. The game control to harvest the wheat depends on the version of Minecraft:

For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the plant.
For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the plant.
For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
For PS3 and PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
For Wii U, press and hold the ZR button on the gamepad.
For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the plant.
For Education Edition, left click and hold on the plant.

Now you should see wheat floating on the ground.

7. Pick up the Wheat

Make sure you pick up the wheat before it disappears.

TIP: If you harvest your plants too soon, it will give you seeds instead of wheat. Make sure your plants are full-grown before breaking them.

Once you pick up the wheat, it will appear in your hotbar.

Wheat is a very useful item and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.

How to craft Wheat in Survival Mode

1. Open the Crafting Menu

First, open your crafting table so that you have the 3×3 crafting grid that looks like this:

2. Add Items to make Wheat

In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3×3 crafting grid. To make wheat, place 1 hay bale in the 3×3 crafting grid.

When making wheat, it is important that the hay bale is placed in the exact pattern as the image below. In the first row, there should be 1 hay bale in the first box. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for wheat.

Now that you have filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, 9 wheat will appear in the box to the right.

3. Move the Wheat to Inventory

Once you have crafted wheat, you need to move the new items to your inventory.
