Folia Minecraft Server Software (1.21.6, 1.20.1) is a fork of PaperMC that introduces a regionized multithreading mechanism, dividing the Minecraft world into “regions” consisting of groups of nearby chunks. Each region has its own tick loop, running in parallel on separate processing threads, instead of using a single main thread like traditional servers. This significantly improves performance for large servers (hundreds of players) or those with players spread across a wide map, such as SkyBlock or SMP.

Regionized Multithreading:

  • Folia divides the world into regions, each containing a group of chunks (16x16xZ blocks). Each region has its own tick loop, running on a separate thread within a customizable thread pool.
    There is no longer a main thread; each region acts as its own “main thread,” enabling parallel processing and utilizing multiple CPU cores.

Improved Performance for Large Servers:

  • Folia is ideal for servers with a large number of players (100+ players) or players spread across a wide map, such as SkyBlock or SMP. These servers fully leverage multithreading to reduce lag.

Region-Specific Lag Isolation:

  • Lag is isolated within individual regions. For example, a region with a “lag machine” or large farm only reduces TPS in that region, without affecting others, allowing the entire server to maintain stable performance.

Single-Player-Like Spawn Behavior:

  • Folia improves mob spawning behavior, making it closer to the single-player experience compared to traditional multiplayer servers.

Support for Powerful Hardware:

  • Folia maximizes performance on servers with multi-core CPUs (minimum recommendation of 16 physical cores). In a test on an AMD EPYC 96-core CPU, Folia used approximately 37 threads to handle 501 players, with the potential to scale to 1,336–2,582 players if performance scales linearly.
