Data Packs are built-in customization files that modify crafting recipes, loot tables, world generation, advancements, and game mechanics without needing any mods or modloaders. They work with vanilla Minecraft and are applied per world. Below is a simple, step-by-step guide.

1. Understanding Data Packs
- No Modloader Needed: Data packs work with vanilla Minecraft – no Forge, Fabric, or any other software required.
- Per-World: Each data pack is installed into a specific world, not globally. Different worlds can have different data packs.
- What They Can Do: Add custom recipes, change mob loot drops, create custom advancements, modify world generation, add custom structures, and change game rules.
- What They Cannot Do: Data packs cannot add new blocks, new items with custom textures, or change the game’s visual appearance – use mods or resource packs for that.
2. Download a Data Pack
- Find Data Packs:
- Browse at: https://www.9minecraft.net/category/minecraft-data-packs/
- Popular examples: Vanilla Tweaks (quality-of-life changes), Custom crafting recipes, One Player Sleep, Custom world generation.
- Ensure the data pack matches your Minecraft version.
- Download: Download the data pack file (usually a
.zipfile). Do not extract it.
3. Install the Data Pack
There are two methods depending on whether the world already exists or not.
Method 1: Add to an Existing World
- Open the Saves Folder: Press Win + R, type
%appdata%\.minecraft\saves, and press Enter. - Open Your World Folder: Find and open the folder of the world you want to add the data pack to.
- Open the datapacks Folder: Inside the world folder, open the
datapacksfolder. If it doesn’t exist, create a new folder nameddatapacks. - Copy the Data Pack: Place the downloaded
.zipfile directly into thedatapacksfolder. - Reload In-Game: Open the world in Minecraft and type
/reloadin chat. The data pack will activate immediately.
Method 2: Add When Creating a New World
- Open Minecraft → Click Singleplayer → Create New World.
- Click “Data Packs” button.
- Click “Open Pack Folder” – this opens the
datapacksfolder for the new world. - Copy the downloaded
.zipfile into this folder. - Go back to the game – the data pack will appear on the left side (Available).
- Click the arrow (▶) to move it to the right side (Selected).
- Click “Done” and create the world. The data pack will be active from the start.
4. Managing Data Packs
- Check Active Data Packs: Type
/datapack listin chat to see all enabled and disabled data packs. - Enable a Data Pack: Type
/datapack enable "file/packname.zip". - Disable a Data Pack: Type
/datapack disable "file/packname.zip". - Priority Order: If multiple data packs modify the same thing, the one loaded last takes priority. Use
/datapack listto check the order.
5. Important Notes
- Version Compatibility: Data pack format changes between Minecraft versions. A data pack for 1.20.x may not work on 1.21.x due to format updates. Always check the supported version.
- World Generation Data Packs: Packs that change world generation (custom biomes, structures) only affect newly generated chunks. Already explored areas will remain unchanged. For best results, use these on a new world.
- Conflicts: Two data packs that modify the same recipe or loot table will conflict – the higher-priority pack wins. If something doesn’t work, try disabling other data packs to find the conflict.
- Cheats Must Be Enabled: To use
/reloadand/datapackcommands, your world must have cheats enabled. If cheats are off, open the world to LAN (Esc → Open to LAN → Allow Cheats: ON) to use commands temporarily. - Uninstalling: To remove a data pack, simply delete the
.zipfile from thedatapacksfolder and type/reloadin-game. Some data packs may leave behind scoreboards or custom data – check the pack’s instructions for a clean uninstall.
