Running a Minecraft server is a very resource intensive task. Ticks are the basic unit in the game, and each tick lasts for 1/20th of a second. And the game checks for updates once every tick. This means the game checks for updates 20 times in a second. This makes the game very resource intensive, especially for servers. Slumber Mod makes the Minecraft servers less resource intensive simply by freezing the server when no players are online.
