This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft a crafting table with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, the crafting table is one of the most important items in your inventory. A crafting table is often called a workbench and is used to make more complex items.

When you start a new Minecraft game, you get a small 2×2 crafting grid that allows you to make very simple items.

Although the 2×2 crafting grid is great when you first get started. You will soon find that it is not big enough to craft more complex items such as tools, weapons, and armor.

To upgrade the crafting area, you need a crafting table. Once you have made a crafting table, your inventory screen will no longer display the initial 2×2 crafting grid, but rather a larger 3×3 crafting grid. The crafting table gives you the 3×3 crafting grid that looks like this:

Let’s explore how to make a crafting table.

Where to find a Crafting Table in Creative Mode

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

Here is where you can find a crafting table in the Creative Inventory menu:

Platform Version(s) Creative Menu Location
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.8 – 1.19
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.19.3 – 1.19.4
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers where the item can be found in the menu location listed (we have tested and confirmed this version number).
  • Creative Menu Location is the location of the item in the Creative Inventory menu.

Required Materials to make a Crafting Table

In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to craft a crafting table:

4 Oak Planks
4 Spruce Planks
4 Birch Planks
4 Jungle Planks
4 Acacia Planks
4 Dark Oak Planks
4 Mangrove Planks
4 Bamboo Planks
4 Crimson Planks
4 Warped Planks

TIP: You can use any type of wood planks! You don’t have to gather them all.

How to craft a Crafting Table in Survival Mode

1. Open the Crafting Menu

Before you can craft a crafting table, make sure you have the required material and then open your crafting menu. The game control to open your crafting menu depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), press the E key to open the crafting menu.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap the triple dotted button on the right of the hotbar to open the crafting menu.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the Square button  on the PS controller to open the crafting menu.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the X button  on the Xbox controller to open the crafting menu.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, press the E key to open the crafting menu.
  • For Wii U, press the Y button on the gamepad to open the crafting menu.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press the Y button on the controller to open the crafting menu.
  • For Education Edition, press the E key to open the crafting menu.

2. Add Items to make a Crafting Table

In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 2×2 crafting grid. To make a crafting table, place 4 wood planks in the 2×2 crafting grid.

When crafting with wood planks, you can use any kind of wood planks, such as oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, bamboo, crimson, or warped planks. In our example, we are using oak planks.

When making a crafting table (also called work bench), it is important that the wood planks are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for a crafting table.

However, since we are just starting with a 2×2 crafting grid, all four boxes will be filled with wood planks so the pattern doesn’t matter in this case.

Now that you have filled the crafting area with the correct pattern, the crafting table will appear in the box to the right.

3. Move the Crafting Table to Inventory

Once you have crafted a crafting table, you need to move the new item to your inventory.

Now you have made a crafting table in Minecraft!

Item ID and Name

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

In Minecraft, a crafting table has the following Name, ID and DataValue:

Description
(Minecraft ID Name)
Data Value Stack Size Version
Crafting Table
(minecraft:crafting_table)
0 64 1.8 – 1.12
Crafting Table
(minecraft:crafting_table)
64 1.13 – 1.19.4
  • Description is what the item is called and (Minecraft ID Name) is the string value that is used in game commands.
  • Data Value (or damage value) identifies the variation of the block if more than one type exists for the Minecraft ID.
  • Stack Size is the maximum stack size for this item. While some items in Minecraft are stackable up to 64, other items can only be stacked up to 16 or 1. (NOTE: These stack sizes are for vanilla Minecraft only. If you are running a mod, some mods may change the stack size for an item.)
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers that the Minecraft ID and Name are valid for.
