Swords gain a defensive stance with Sword Blocking, an add-on where sneaking with a sword in the main hand cuts incoming damage.

The stance gives 80% damage reduction from melee sources and 99% from projectiles such as arrows, but nothing against splash potion effects. It works with any existing sword and with other add-ons that add swords, and compatible swords show a Blocking icon. Shields take priority, so the stance does not activate when a shield is equipped. Scripting APIs must be enabled for it to work, which means turning on Experimental Features, and both the behavior pack and the resource pack must be applied.
