Minecraft functions on something called “block updates”. A block in the game will continue to remain in its current state unless an action causes the block to check for updates. This might be confusing, but can easily be understood with a simple example. When you visit desert biomes, you will notice floating sand blocks. They will remain floating until you interact with a nearby block, which will cause the floating sand to get updated and fall down.
