Item Signs Mod (1.21.7, 1.21.1) allows you to place items into signs, similar to item frames. This allows you to make chest storage indicators and such for cheaper, as sign boards only require wood in the crafting recipe. This works with regular signs as well as hanging signs of all the wood variants in the game.
