Via Backwards Mod (1.21.8, 1.20.1) – Backward Compatibility
Via Backwards Mod (1.21.8, 1.20.1) is an add-on for the ViaVersion plugin that enables older Minecraft clients (starting from 1.9) to connect to newer server versions. It’s a vital tool for server administrators who want to support a wider range of players without forcing everyone to update their game.
Features:
- Lets clients from Minecraft 1.9 and up join servers running newer versions (e.g., 1.20+).
- Converts newer server packets into formats readable by older clients.
- Older clients won’t gain access to new blocks, items, or mechanics—they’ll just avoid crashing.
- Sound mappings may be incomplete
- Inventory desyncs can occur on versions below 1.17
- Clients below 1.19.4 may not use the smithing table on 1.20+ servers (can be fixed with AxSmithing)
