This Minecraft tutorial explains all about zombie horses with screenshots and step-by-step instructions. Let’s learn about zombie horses in Minecraft.

Background

A zombie horse is a variant of horse in Minecraft. The following is a picture of what a zombie horse looks like in the game:

Hostility Level Passive Mob
Health Points 53 health points
 x 26.5
Where to Find Does not spawn naturally
(must be summoned with a command)
Weapon None
Attack Method Will never attack you
Drops 0-2 Rotten Flesh
 1 Saddle (if equipped)
Experience Points 1-3 experience points
Special Skills Can be ridden

Hostility Level (Passive)

A zombie horse is a passive mob. The term mob is short for mobile and is used to refer to all living, moving creatures in the game such as chickens, creepers, and zombie horses. Because a zombie horse is a passive mob, it will never attack you in the game (Creative or Survival mode).

Health Points

In Minecraft, a zombie horse has 26.5  for health. This gives a zombie horse 53 health points (because 1 heart = 2 health points). To kill a zombie horse, you need to inflict 53 points of damage.

Where to Find Zombie Horses

In Minecraft, zombie horses do not spawn naturally in the game, so you must spawn one using a zombie horse spawn egg or you can summon a zombie horse using a cheat.

Weapon

A zombie horse does not carry a weapon.

Attack Method

You are safe to walk near a zombie horse and it will not attack or cause you any damage. And if you attack a zombie horse, it will just try to run away. It will not attack you back.

Drops

When you kill a zombie horse in Minecraft, it will drop rotten flesh.

If the zombie horse was wearing a saddle, it would also have been dropped when the zombie horse was killed.

Make sure you pick up the dropped items before they disappear. These are useful and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.

Experience Points

As you play the game, you will gain experience. The most common way to gain experience is by killing mobs. When a mob is killed you will see tiny green and yellow balls appear and move towards you.

These orbs represent experience points. When you kill a zombie horse, you will gain 1-3 experience points.

Foods to Feed a Zombie Horse

In Minecraft, you can not feed a zombie horse!

But if you need to restore the health for a zombie horse, you can use an item that has an Instant Damage effect such as:

How to make an Arrow of Harming (Instant Damage)
How to make an Arrow of Harming (Instant Damage II)
How to make a Splash Potion of Harming (Instant Damage)
How to make a Splash Potion of Harming (Instant Damage II)
How to make a Lingering Potion of Harming (Instant Damage)
How to make a Lingering Potion of Harming (Instant Damage II)

Since a zombie horse is undead, the Instant Damage effect will restore health points to the zombie horse. Try throwing a splash potion or lingering potion of Harming at the zombie horse or shoot an arrow of Harming at the zombie horse to restore its health.

Ride the Zombie Horse

If you have summoned a zombie horse that is tame and wearing a saddle, you can ride it and control its movements.

The game control to ride the zombie horse depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the zombie horse.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you move your pointer over the zombie horse and press the Mount button.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.

You will mount and be riding the zombie horse. You can move the zombie horse using the same controls that you use to move yourself.

The game control to dismount the zombie horse depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), press the left shift key.
